Mrs. Franz was the first white child to be born in the West Side settlement. She was baptized September 18, 1873 and later confirmed, always being a member <strong>of</strong> the Reformed Church. On July 18, 1899, she was united in marriage with Wm. C. Franz, who preceded her in death nearly two years ago. A little daughter Lydia and one grandson also preceded her in death. Mrs. Franz leaves to mourn her death five sons, Karl, Albert, William, Ferdinand and August; and three daughters, Bertha (Mrs. Ernest Elmer) <strong>of</strong> Greenwood; Clara (Mrs. Alfred Gray) <strong>of</strong> Loyal and Sophie <strong>of</strong> Owen, four grandchildren, Thomas and Lester Elmer and Kenneth and Laverne Gray, two sisters, Mrs. Henry Franz and Mrs. John Abel <strong>of</strong> Greenwood, four brothers, Louis <strong>of</strong> Girard, Mont; Alfred <strong>of</strong> Passaic, Wyoming; Arthur <strong>of</strong> Sayle, Montana; Gustave <strong>of</strong> Snohomish, Washington. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the West Side Reformed church, Rev. Franzmeier <strong>of</strong>ficiating. Burial was made in the West Side cemetery. Those from away who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Otto Arnhoelter, Karl Arnhoelter, Lillian and Arnold Stoelting <strong>of</strong> Plymouth, Mrs. John Kippenhan <strong>of</strong> Appleton, Cilla Kippenhan <strong>of</strong> Neillsville and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Sophie Franz was born on Jan 12, 1907 in rural Greenwood, to William C. and Anna (Decker) Franz. She was raised northeast <strong>of</strong> Greenwood, and educated at the Braun Settlement School. She worked in Milwaukee for a few years as a housekeeper. She had been at the <strong>Clark</strong> <strong>County</strong> Care Center for 75 years due to illness. Survivors include nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, two sisters, and five bruthers. Full military rites were performed by the Greenwood American Legion. Rev. John Tschudy <strong>of</strong>ficated and burial was in Westside Cemetery, Relatives served as pallbearers. Ferdinand Franz was born Oct 26, 1908, in the twon <strong>of</strong> Warner, to William and Anna (nee Decker) Franz. He received his education at Braun Settlement schools. He farmed in his younger years and later worked for Stewart and Wuetrich cheese factores. He then retired and resided in Greenwood. He has been a resient at King since July. He was a World War II veteran and a member <strong>of</strong> the Greenwood American Legion. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Elmer, Greenwood; and Sophia Franz, Owen. 35
