shafskopf (a card game popular among Wisconsin's German Americans - a
common Kippenhan past time). If you didn't know August, his love of a good
verbal scrap could be intimidating. I know that I found it so as a young boy, when
we'd visit with he and his sisters at 1315 South Mason Street in Appleton,
Wisconsin. As I got a bit older, I realized that August just enjoyed the debate.
Then it was no longer a personal attack, but a war of wits.
==========
Greg Kippenhan, August's nephew, shared the following story me some years ago
(August 1997). Greg has worked for P.G. Miron ever since he graduated from high
school.
August worked as a mason's laborer afor the company. In the hot weather months,
he'd bring a six pack of beer to work and drop into his water barrel to keep it cool.
When he got thirsty, he'd pop the top off a beer and solve the problem. It was his
abit to mix a fresh batch of mortar just before the lunch break. That way, right after
lunch he could just add a little water, mix the 'mud' just a bit, and ease into the
afternoon of labor.
One day a couple of his co-workers snuck off during lunch and put a huge rock in
August's waiting batch of mortar. Augie finished lunch, went out and put some
water in his batch of mortar, and started to mix it up. C*L*U*N*K! He never said
a word to anyone. He just wheeled the batch of mortar, rock and all, to the edge of
the construction site. He dumped the mess out, and went back to mix a fresh batch
of mortar. No satisfaction was offered the pranksters.
