As a young man he worked his way West through the grain and harvest fields, eventually landing in<br />
Montana in April, 1917. He went to work in the Giard community and was later joined by his brother,<br />
Adolph, who also worked in the community. In 1918 he was drafted into the Army. He was sent to Ft.<br />
Lewis, Wash. where he remained only a short time. He was given a medical discharge and went to work<br />
in the harvest fields <strong>of</strong> Eastern Washington, returning to the sidney ar4ea in the fall <strong>of</strong> 1918. That<br />
winter he carried mail from Sidney to Enid for Joe Kearns. The following spring he again worked in the<br />
Giard neighborhood on the farm and ranch that he and his brother Adolph bought and farmed together<br />
until 1942 as Franz Brothers.<br />
He married Ethel C. McMillen at Glendive, Montana, march 4, 1931. They made their home on the<br />
farm where they reared their four children. For many years he served on the local school board and<br />
helped to build and maintain the fist telephone line in the area. He was active in helping the children<br />
with club work and tier various community activities. Fed was a member <strong>of</strong> the Legion Post No. 12 in<br />
Sidney. Fred and Ethel retired from the farm in 1958, moving to their new home south <strong>of</strong> Sidney where<br />
they lived until his death. They have for the past several winters spent the colder months in Florida with<br />
their son, Robert.<br />
Fred is survived by his widow, Ethel; four children, ray, on the family farm; Mrs. Joe (Wilmna) Horrall,<br />
Beaverton,m Ore; Mrs. Wayne (Leona) Gibson, Boseman, Mont; and Robert <strong>of</strong> Bartow, Fla. Three<br />
brothers, Calvin, Greenwood, Wis; Otto, Mesa, Ariz; Harold, Sidney; and one sister Mrs. Alvin (Leona)<br />
Albert, Greenwood. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was<br />
preceded in dath by his brother, Adolph, and one sister, Mrs. Otto (Alma) Fravert; and a grandson,<br />
Donald Horrall.<br />
