GREEK EASTER...THE BEDOUIN WAY!
Από πολιτισμικής απόψεως, το Πάσχα είναι πολύ πιο ενδιαφέρουσα γιορτή
από ότι τα Χριστούγεννα. Κάθε μέρα της Μεγάλης Εβδομάδας είναι
συνδεδεμένη και με ένα έθιμο -το ζύμωμα των τσουρεκιών, το βάψιμο των
αυγών, το στόλισμα του επιτάφιου...
Ειδικά όσοι ήμασταν παιδιά στα χρόνια της Υ.ΕΝ.Ε.Δ. θυμόμαστε πως ακόμα κι η τηλεόραση ‘πενθούσε’ εκείνη την
εβδομάδα.
Σήμερα βέβαια, το Πάσχα τείνει να ‘Χριστουγεννοποιηθεί’ όπως πολύ εύστοχα περιγράφει πρόσφατη διαφήμιση,
με τους οβελίες στη σούβλα, τις κραιπάλες και τα γλέντια. Υπάρχει όμως ένας τόπος όπου ‘το Πάσχα το Ελληνικό’
γιορτάζεται με ένα μείγμα ηρεμίας και κατάνυξης, ικανό να γοητεύσει ακόμα και τους άθρησκους.
Η Αγία Αικατερίνα είναι το αρχαιότερο Χριστιανικό μοναστήρι στον κόσμο, με συνεχή ζωή εδώ και 1700 χρόνια,
κρυμμένο στα βάθη της χερσονήσου του Σινά, σε υψόμετρο 1600 μέτρα μέσα σε ένα φαινομενικά πολύ αφιλόξενο
τοπίο ‘πετραίας’ ερήμου.
From a cultural point of view, Easter is a much more interesting festivity than Christmas. Every day of the Holy
Week is assigned to a different custom -making the sweet bread, painting the eggs red, attending the epitaph
procession... Especially those of us that were children in the era prior to the privatisation of television, remember
that during those seven days even the TV was in mourning.
Today of course, it is a totally different story -as Easter tends to become ‘Cristmasized’, and our attention goes
only to the big feasts, with plenty of eating, drinking and ‘making merry’. But there is this one place where Easter
is celebrated with a mixture of serenity and piety, able to charm even the non-believer.
Saint Catherine, is the oldest Christian Monastery in the world, with a consecutive life of more than 1700 years,
hidden in the depths of the Sinai Peninsula, at an altitude of 1600m in a seemingly inhospitable landscape of
‘rocky’ desert.
