Actions needed for the medium- <strong>and</strong> long-term reconstruction<br />

phase (beyond 1 year) include the following:<br />

Procure adequate road maintenance equipment<br />

such as asphalt plants (2), <strong>and</strong> other machinery such<br />

as excavators (2), an excavator/digger (1), a road<br />

grader (1), a milling machine (1), small rollers (2), <strong>and</strong><br />

a large roller (1). Estimated cost = SR 30,000,000.<br />

Implement the proposals made from the studies <strong>and</strong><br />

resulting plans proposed above.<br />

Construct additional retaining walls to protect roads.<br />

Estimated cost = SR 12,000,000.<br />

2.2.1.2 Water Supply <strong>and</strong> Sanitation<br />

Overview<br />

The Public Utilities Corporation (PUC), which reports<br />

to the Ministry of Energy <strong>and</strong> Environment, is the main<br />

service provider in the <strong>Seychelles</strong> for the provision of<br />

electricity, water, <strong>and</strong> sanitation services, with its mission<br />

focused on the following:<br />

To provide an efficient, safe, <strong>and</strong> reliable supply of<br />

electricity <strong>and</strong> treated water.<br />

■■<br />

To treat <strong>and</strong> dispose of wastewater while paying due<br />

regard to the environment <strong>and</strong> customers’ interest.<br />

■■<br />

To keep up with changes in technology to improve<br />

services.<br />

The Water <strong>and</strong> Sewerage Division within the PUC is responsible<br />

for the production <strong>and</strong> distribution of treated<br />

water on the isl<strong>and</strong>s of Mahé, Praslin, La Digue, <strong>and</strong><br />

the Inner Isl<strong>and</strong>s. The provision for sanitation services<br />

is also provided for Mahé Isl<strong>and</strong> only, in the form of<br />

four isolated sewage treatment plant systems, namely<br />

Victoria, Beau Vallon, Pointe Larue, <strong>and</strong> Anse Aux Pins<br />

(Chetty Flats) sewerage systems.<br />

The core activities of the Water <strong>and</strong> Sewerage Division<br />

are:
