S1 regional employment indicators in this section > Unemployment Rate - ABS > Job Advertisements - Barwon Region For updates on regional employment indicators visit: www.geelongaustralia.com.au/business 2008/09 Regional employment summary Unemployment Rate Australian Bureau of Statistics - Barwon Western District The June 2009 unemployment rate for the Barwon-Western District was 6.5%, an increase of 2.7 percentage points when compared to June 2008 (see Table 1 below). This increase is in line with the national trend and indicative of the economic environment in the second half of 2008/09. Compared to the recession in the early 90s when unemployment hit 14.0%, or even five years ago when it averaged 7.0%, the local labour market in 2008/09 has proven to be resilient during challenging global economic conditions. A twelve month average of the unemployment rate to June 2009 shows the Barwon-Western District to be on par with Victoria and Australia (at 5.0%, 5.1% and 4.9% respectively). Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) – Barwon Region According to DEEWR data, the unemployment rate in the Barwon Region reached 5.1% in the June 09 quarter - the same as the Victorian rate. Although the unemployment rate for the Barwon Region increased during the March 09 and June 09 quarters, when compared to the past five years it has remained at a relatively low level (see Graph 2 - page 7). Job Advertisements Demand for labour in the Barwon Region weakened during 2008/09. An average of 169 jobs were advertised each week in the Geelong Advertiser during 2008/09, a decrease of 30.5% on the previous financial year - the first decrease in ten years (see Table 2 - page 7). This trend is also evident in online (Seek) job ads, which show an 11.7% decrease in job ad volume between 2007/08 and 2008/09. The spike in Geelong Advertiser job ads in June 2006 was due to recruitment for a new call centre (see Graph 3 - page 7). Unemployment Allowances Centrelink data shows that the number of people requiring unemployment allowances in the Barwon Region increased by 26.5% between 2007/08 and 2008/09 (from 6,569 people to 8,312 people).
