one jacket to each athlete who letters in the student’s high school<br />

career.<br />

• SITUATION: A school wins the state championship and desires for<br />

the players to have a commemorative award. May the school or a<br />

community sponsor buy rings for the players?<br />

INTERPRETATION: Yes, symbolic awards (i.e., non-cash) presented<br />

for winning or placing in GHSA competitions are limited to<br />

$250.00 per year, per student in the aggregate, paid for by the local<br />

school.<br />

• SITUATION: A student who wins a non-GHSA tennis tournament is<br />

offered (a) a cash prize of $100.00, or (b) a merchandise certificate<br />

worth $250.00 in tennis equipment and/or apparel. How will these<br />

awards affect the student’s amateur status?<br />

RULING: The GHSA follows the rules of the United States Tennis<br />

<strong>Association</strong>. USTA rules forbid the acceptance of money but do<br />

allows the acceptance of merchandise not to exceed $250.00.<br />

• SITUATION: A student wins her flight in a non-GHSA golf tournament<br />

and is offered (a) a cash prize of $150.00, or (b) a set of irons valued<br />

at $600.00. How will these awards affect the student’s amateur<br />

status?<br />

RULING: The GHSA follows the rules of the United States Golf<br />

<strong>Association</strong>. USGA rules forbid the acceptance of money, but do<br />

allow the acceptance of merchandise not to exceed $750.00.<br />

BY-LAW 2.00 - SCHOOL<br />

2.10 - SCHOOL MEMBERSHIP TO GHSA<br />

2.11 The <strong>Georgia</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Association</strong> is a voluntary association<br />

available to any <strong>Georgia</strong> high school, grades 9-12, that has been<br />

authorized to seek membership by the local board of education or<br />

similar governing body of control.<br />

(a) Member schools agree to conform to the Constitution and<br />

By-Laws of the GHSA.<br />

(b) Member schools agree to conform to the rules of the region<br />

organizations to which they are assigned.<br />

(c) Should a conflict arise between state rules and region rules,<br />

the state rules always take precedent.<br />

2.12 Procedure for Membership:<br />

(a) The local board of education or similar governing body of<br />

control must adopt a resolution authorizing membership for<br />

the high school.
