International Incoming Student’s Guide annoying to find out that you will still have to queue and that the self‐service machines often do not work properly. You may have to go to the ticket office anyway to get your ticket. Regular tickets are valid for two months. You can travel on all the trains that do not need a reservation. You should plan your journey in advance or allow enough time at the station before your train departure to buy the ticket. The station gets pretty crowded and the queue at the ticket office and at the self‐service machines might get fairly long especially on Mondays and Fridays, when weekly commuting students usually travel, and also every day early in the morning or late in the afternoon. It is obligatory to validate your ticket! Before starting, both the journey to and back, it is obligatory to validate the ticket using the yellow or orange punching machines near the platforms or in some cases at the station. Once validated, the ticket is valid for 6 hours for journeys with a distance less than 200 km, and 24 hours for travels with a distance greater than 200 km. In case you forget to validate your ticket, inform the staff on the train. You may have to pay a fine, but controllers are quite tolerant especially with foreigners. If the ticket office is closed and the ticket machine broken or there is no validating machine at the railway station, inform the staff before the departure and you will not be fined. 4.2.2 Subscription Abbonamento If you are planning to take the train often, you might be interested in buying a discount card. If you are younger than 26, you can get a “Carta Verde”: it costs 40 € and you get a 10% discount on all national trains and 25% off on some international trains. Validity of the discount card is one year. If you do not plan to take trains on a regular basis, you probably do not need this discount card as trains in Italy are relatively cheap and you might not even get back the initial cost of the card. They are less expensive than the other trains but slower, as they usually stop at every station. If you do not explicitly ask for a ticket for a certain type of train, you will get the regular one that you can use on any of the trains listed above. As far as the more expensive trains are concerned, the most common ones are the IC, intercity, the ES* (Eurostar) and the new fast trains (Frecciarossa, Frecciabianca, Frecciargento). International Incoming Student’s Guide buy the ticket. You can book your seat on these trains paying an additional fee (sometimes it is compulsory). These trains usually cover longer distances than the regular ones and they are often delayed. If you are not travelling that far, the regular trains might even be more reliable. Always check that you have got the right type of ticket for the train you want to take. You can see the letter that identifies the type of train on the main display screen at the station. At bigger stations, there is usually a display with the train name, time and destination and possible delay next to the platform. Be careful when you are waiting on the platform because it is possible that a different train arrives before the one you are waiting for, or that your train arrives at a different platform. This will be shown on the display on the platform and announced via loudspeaker. To know at what platform (binario) your train arrives, you can either check the monitors (the one for departures, partenze) located inside the station or the yellow/white (departures/arrivals) notice boards located both inside the station and on every platform. The notice boards contain detailed information about the train and the stations at which it stops, time of arrival, platform, identifying name or letter, composition of the coaches, services on board. In Italy it is forbidden to smoke on trains and other public closed places such as restaurants, clubs, pubs, offices.
