<strong>International</strong> <strong>Incoming</strong> Student’s <strong>Guide</strong><br />
Some modules are compulsory for your degree, some others you will have to select<br />
among a limited options provided, some (not for every faculty) are completely free for<br />
you to choose.<br />
6.2 University life Vita universitaria<br />
6.2.1 Welcome Day<br />
During the last week of September a welcoming programme is organised by the Ufficio<br />
Mobilità Studentesca, Erasmus Coor<strong>di</strong>nators of each faculty and the ESN Erasmus student<br />
network.<br />

It is an opportunity for new international students to be introduced to the academic and<br />
administrative staff of the university, to get to know other international students and to<br />
learn about the university life and the new environment as quickly and easily as possible.<br />
The programme will include a welcoming, an introduction to practical issues and essential<br />
services, and a tour of the campus and of the town. It is highly recommended to<br />
participate because the programme provides the students with practical information and<br />
advice, and makes the impact with the new life in <strong>Pavia</strong> much easier!<br />
6.2.2 Language Centre Centro Linguistico<br />
In recent years, the University of <strong>Pavia</strong> has answered to the growth in international<br />
communication by strengthening its language learning resources. Some thirty‐odd<br />
mother‐tongue foreign language experts (Collaboratori ed esperti linguistici) provide<br />
language support services for the university staff and students. Students and visitors are<br />
advised to contact the technical staff at the languages laboratories with regard to the<br />
facilities and services, which include self‐study language labs and access to an impressive<br />
stock of courses, exam materials, <strong>di</strong>ctionaries, au<strong>di</strong>o and videotapes and DVD films in 50<br />
languages.<br />
Other services provided by the Language Centre include:<br />
• Lingua italiana per stranieri (Italian as a foreign language). The Language Centre is<br />
an authorized centre for the CILS exam (Certificazione <strong>di</strong> Italiano come Lingua<br />
Straniera) in Italian as a foreign language. The Centre runs exam sessions in June<br />
and December lea<strong>di</strong>ng to the CILS certificate awarded by the <strong>Università</strong> per<br />
Stranieri <strong>di</strong> Siena.<br />
• Lingua inglese per stranieri (English as a foreign language). The Language Centre<br />
is an authorized centre for Cambridge Assessment/UCLES and the PET, FCE, CAE<br />
and CPE exam.<br />
