8. Accomodation<br />
One of the first problems to solve once in <strong>Pavia</strong> will be fin<strong>di</strong>ng a place for your stay. You<br />
could find a room in one of the University Residence Halls (residenze, collegi) or rent a<br />
room or a flat with your friends.<br />
8.1 University Residence Halls<br />
The University of <strong>Pavia</strong> has a well‐established system of 17 university residence halls.<br />
They can be defined as an “integrated service system” and the best solution to meet<br />
students’ needs and rights. The residence halls offer a wide range of services:<br />
accommodation, canteens, cooking facilities, internet, study rooms, TV, laundry, sport<br />
facilities, social integration opportunities and cultural activities. Some residence halls<br />
have their own academic offer within the UNIPV system, and they organize activities such<br />
as conferences, seminars, meetings. There are three kinds of residence halls: the<br />
historical ones, the public ones (run by EDiSU) and the private ones.<br />
8.1.1 Historical Residence Halls<br />
There are four historical or “merit” Residence Halls: the Almo Collegio Borromeo (the<br />
oldest in Italy, founded in 1561), the Collegio Ghislieri (founded in 1567), the Collegio<br />
Santa Caterina and the Collegio Nuovo. These colleges, reserved only for the best<br />
students, offer post‐graduate advanced study courses at the IUSS (University Institute for<br />
Advanced Stu<strong>di</strong>es).<br />
8.1.2 EDiSU Residence Halls<br />
Public residence halls are run by EDiSU. Some have a strong history in hosting students<br />
(for example Castiglioni since 1429, and Cairoli since 1781) while other residence halls are<br />
newer (Valla, Spallanzani, Griziotti, Golgi 1 and Golgi 2, Volta) or were established in old<br />
buil<strong>di</strong>ngs (Maino, Fraccaro, Cardano). Generally residence halls offer accommodation to<br />
both male and female students but in some cases they are only for female (Castiglioni) or<br />
male students (Spallanzani, Fraccaro, Cardano, Cairoli). Entry is only by a public<br />
competition. Students pay an annual fee accor<strong>di</strong>ng to their family income. However,<br />
every year EDiSU reserves some places to international students.<br />
