8. Accomodation
One of the first problems to solve once in Pavia will be finding a place for your stay. You
could find a room in one of the University Residence Halls (residenze, collegi) or rent a
room or a flat with your friends.
8.1 University Residence Halls
The University of Pavia has a well‐established system of 17 university residence halls.
They can be defined as an “integrated service system” and the best solution to meet
students’ needs and rights. The residence halls offer a wide range of services:
accommodation, canteens, cooking facilities, internet, study rooms, TV, laundry, sport
facilities, social integration opportunities and cultural activities. Some residence halls
have their own academic offer within the UNIPV system, and they organize activities such
as conferences, seminars, meetings. There are three kinds of residence halls: the
historical ones, the public ones (run by EDiSU) and the private ones.
8.1.1 Historical Residence Halls
There are four historical or “merit” Residence Halls: the Almo Collegio Borromeo (the
oldest in Italy, founded in 1561), the Collegio Ghislieri (founded in 1567), the Collegio
Santa Caterina and the Collegio Nuovo. These colleges, reserved only for the best
students, offer post‐graduate advanced study courses at the IUSS (University Institute for
Advanced Studies).
8.1.2 EDiSU Residence Halls
Public residence halls are run by EDiSU. Some have a strong history in hosting students
(for example Castiglioni since 1429, and Cairoli since 1781) while other residence halls are
newer (Valla, Spallanzani, Griziotti, Golgi 1 and Golgi 2, Volta) or were established in old
buildings (Maino, Fraccaro, Cardano). Generally residence halls offer accommodation to
both male and female students but in some cases they are only for female (Castiglioni) or
male students (Spallanzani, Fraccaro, Cardano, Cairoli). Entry is only by a public
competition. Students pay an annual fee according to their family income. However,
every year EDiSU reserves some places to international students.
