physical <strong>fitness</strong>, it may also be accompanied by an increase in the number and incidences <strong>of</strong><br />

injuries sustained by <strong>players</strong> (Gabbett, 2004).<br />

It is not entirely clear why sprint performance significantly improved for both positional<br />

groups whereas an increase in percentage body fat and aerobic endurance was observed for<br />

backs and forwards, respectively. Further research on the effects <strong>of</strong> concurrent training on the<br />

maintenance or improvement <strong>of</strong> power in female <strong>rugby</strong> <strong>players</strong> would increase our<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> the changes in physical <strong>fitness</strong> during a lengthy competition season.<br />

5.5 CONCLUSIONS<br />

It was hypothesised that there would be a significant difference between the forwards and<br />

backs physical <strong>fitness</strong>. The current study reinforces scientific evidence that there is a<br />

distinction between the forwards and backs with respect to anthropometric and physical<br />

performance characteristics. The forward <strong>players</strong> had a greater body mass, higher sum <strong>of</strong><br />

skinfolds and larger body fat percentage whereas backs demonstrated superior leg power and<br />

speed. With forward and backs spending greater time in physical contact and sprinting,<br />

respectively, during a game, this gives support to the concept <strong>of</strong> position-specific strength and<br />

conditioning programs.<br />

The results <strong>of</strong> the present study suggest that there may have been a limited improvement in<br />

physical <strong>fitness</strong> between pre-season and mid-season within forwards and backs as it was<br />
