In both positional groups, no significant changes were determined in the sum <strong>of</strong> skinfolds,<br />

vertical jump height, 1 RM bench press, 1 min push-ups and multi-stage shuttle run test scores<br />

between pre-season and mid-season. Whereas, sprint times (10m and 40m) significantly<br />

decreased for both forwards and backs, regardless <strong>of</strong> the significant decrease in percent body<br />

fat during the same time period. Although a significant increase in speed was observed, there<br />

were no significant changes in the other physical <strong>fitness</strong> characteristics measured. Based on<br />

the results achieved, further studies are required to determine the appropriate training stimulus<br />

to enhance the physical <strong>fitness</strong> characteristics <strong>of</strong> <strong>elite</strong> women’s <strong>rugby</strong> <strong>union</strong> <strong>players</strong> during the<br />

early phase <strong>of</strong> the season without compromising speed.<br />
