Given these possible reas<strong>on</strong>s for n<strong>on</strong>adopti<strong>on</strong> of soil c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> recommendati<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

it could be said that projects whose chief objective is <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

to c<strong>on</strong>serve soil are, in fact, the least successful in doing so.<br />

The types and sequences of plants that land users grow are dictated by<br />

c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s of profit and/or subsistence. The types and sequmces of<br />

plants that c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong>ists may recommend are often dictated by a primary<br />

c<strong>on</strong>cerii for soil c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong>. Plants used to achieve the two goals may<br />

or n~ay not be different. Emphasizing activities that improve soil c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

for rooting favors the farmer's aim of more vegetative producti<strong>on</strong> per<br />

hectare. Crop cover and plant residue assist the farmer's goal of good<br />
