ST. CATHARINES.<br />

The city <strong>of</strong> St. Cath.rines, the county seat <strong>of</strong> Lincoln, is situated on<br />

a level plateau below the mountain, and is the centre <strong>of</strong> tb~ most fertile<br />

and thickly settlml agricultural districts <strong>of</strong> the Province. It is the<br />

principal point on the Weiland Canal. A street railwav connecls the<br />

city with Mel'ritton and Thorold. .<br />

The principal public buildings are the county buildings and court<br />

house, costing $:32,000, the post<strong>of</strong>fic~, St. ,Joseph's convem, Protestant<br />

home and refuge, marine hospital, grand central hlock, Allan block,<br />

Broadway block, Masonic temple, Academy <strong>of</strong> music, and the churches,<br />

which are mostly built <strong>of</strong> stone and brick, and finished aftel' the most<br />

modern styles <strong>of</strong> architecture. The school buildings are also substantial<br />

brick stl'uctm·es.<br />

The Grand Trunk railway (Great Western division) pa"es throuqh<br />

th" city, and the WeIland division, running north and south, connecting<br />

with the MIchigan Central, U. W. Airline, and the Buffalo and Gode·<br />

rich branch <strong>of</strong> the G. T. R. There is also a new line (the Niagar!t Cen·<br />

tral) to be built, connecting the city with Buffalo on the east and <strong>Toronto</strong><br />

on the west. .<br />

Ship building i. largely carried on here. The water power is largely<br />

made use <strong>of</strong> by some <strong>of</strong> the most extensi ve flour mills in the Province.<br />

In addition to these industries there ar~ numerous other manufHcturing eliltablishments.<br />

There are two daily and two we"kly newspapers.<br />

The city is divided into six wal'ds, viz: 1st, St. Thomas; 2nd, St.<br />

Andrews;' 3d, SL. George; 4th, St. Paul's; 5th, St. Patrick's 6th, St.<br />

James; each retu\'l1ing three aldermen to the city council. Population,<br />

about 10,000.<br />

Distant from <strong>Toronto</strong> by water 33, by rail 72; Hamilton 32, Niagara<br />

Falls 12, and Bnff .. lo 35 miles.
