ST. CATHARINES. The city of St. Cath.rines, the county seat of Lincoln, is situated on a level plateau below the mountain, and is the centre of tb~ most fertile and thickly settlml agricultural districts of the Province. It is the principal point on the Weiland Canal. A street railwav connecls the city with Mel'ritton and Thorold. . The principal public buildings are the county buildings and court house, costing $:32,000, the postoffic~, St. ,Joseph's convem, Protestant home and refuge, marine hospital, grand central hlock, Allan block, Broadway block, Masonic temple, Academy of music, and the churches, which are mostly built of stone and brick, and finished aftel' the most modern styles of architecture. The school buildings are also substantial brick stl'uctm·es. The Grand Trunk railway (Great Western division) pa"es throuqh th" city, and the WeIland division, running north and south, connecting with the MIchigan Central, U. W. Airline, and the Buffalo and Gode· rich branch of the G. T. R. There is also a new line (the Niagar!t Cen· tral) to be built, connecting the city with Buffalo on the east and Toronto on the west. . Ship building i. largely carried on here. The water power is largely made use of by some of the most extensi ve flour mills in the Province. In addition to these industries there ar~ numerous other manufHcturing eliltablishments. There are two daily and two we"kly newspapers. The city is divided into six wal'ds, viz: 1st, St. Thomas; 2nd, St. Andrews;' 3d, SL. George; 4th, St. Paul's; 5th, St. Patrick's 6th, St. James; each retu\'l1ing three aldermen to the city council. Population, about 10,000. Distant from Toronto by water 33, by rail 72; Hamilton 32, Niagara Falls 12, and Bnff .. lo 35 miles.
