Area : Marr
Parish : Drumblade
Kirkyard : Drumblade Parish Kirk.
N.G.R. : NJ 588 403
S.A.M. : Scheduled Site.
Listing Category : Kirk Cat. B,
Yard Cat.C.
Boundary wall and gate piers : The gates require
to be painted and the boundary wall sports
a large crack on the l.h.s. of the gateway, due to
the close proximity of a lime tree. This section
of the wall will need to be re- built soon.
rebuilt entirely, as there is a significant drop to
the ground from the level of the rear kirk door.
All of the recumbent tombstones need to be
brushed free of all grass strimmings and moss.
Interpretative Potential : Low.
The is nothing of particular merit at Drumblade
parish kirk.
Access issues : Located at the side of a country
road, with adequate provision for parking several
cars.
Date of visit : 12/08/98.
The Old Kirk : The kirk was built in 1773,
with a dated skew-putt, to the usual rectangular
form. The kirk is, however, longer than the
average with a five bay S. façade. The W. gable
is crowned by a pedimented and finialled
bellcote dated 1641, complete with bell. The
walls of the kirk are harled with granite margins.
The kirk appears to be in good order though
several of the kirk’s windows are boarded up.
The interior is reputed to contain several good
memorials.
Tombstones : There are 48 recumbent tombstones,
of which 3 are particularly well decorated.
There are many hundreds of upright tombstones
mostly dating from the 19 th - century. One
early 20 th - century memorial of note is the granite
stone suspended from a wall to commemorate
the poet and novellist George MacDonald
and his wife, both of whom resided in Italy.
Conservation Digest : Urgent details.
The steps to the rear of the kirkyard need to be
