Listing Category : Kirk Cat. B. Yard Cat. B, Cross slab Cat. A. Boundary wall and gate piers : The boundary walls and piers are in good order though the gates must be painted soon. The Old Kirk : The old kirk, presumably of early 18 th - century date, is in an advanced state of decay. The S. elevation simply consists of two rectangular window openings still fitted with the original sash and case windows, though several of the panes of glass are broken and the cases require to be painted urgently. Work seems to have been done sometime ago to the window cills. One of the window lintels is cracked. The W. gable features a simple rectangular window opening, again complete with window case. Entry into the kirk is gained by the only opening in the E. gable. Once inside, the immeditate effects of decay are evident as plaster has fallen off the ceiling, the floor timbers are rotten in places and the pine pews and the pulpit are infested by wood –worm. Even the old iron stove remains in situ. Externally there are several cracks in the S. corner of the E. gable and in the S. wall, though in many places the original harling still remains. Tombstones : There are approximately 16 recumbent tombstones, one of which is significantly decorated. The cross slab, carved in relief, is a very good example of its type and is in excellent condition. The design on the E. side is an elaborately carved cross formed with a Celtic knot design. The W. side of the stone, barely decipherable, is carved with a figure of a man on a prancing horse. The yard also contains approximately one hundred upright tombstones dating from the 19 th - century, none of which is particularly interesting. Conservation Digest : Urgent. A programme of urgent remedial works must be implemented if this kirk is to remain. Its reasonably intact interior has been saved thus far solely because the slate roof is in good order. The interior must be inspected to ascertain whether or not dry or wet rot is present prior to the wood work being replaced or restored. All of the windows needs to be checked for rot proir to the broken glass being replaced and the frames painted. A thorough structural survey of the cracks in the external wall also needs to be undertaken. Interpretative Potential : Medium. Although the kirk is in a poor state of preservation, it is remarkable that the interior survives, complete with stove. The door does not have a lock which allows animals and birds to come and go; however, the kirk has not suffered from vandalism. It would make a rather good interpretative centre, or preserved example of its type. The cross slab stone is very fine in detail and is made all the better for having the less grand carved figure on the reverse side. 167
Access issues :The yard is located just off the A97 at Migvie. The kirk sits at the top of a small hill with no provision for parking cars. Date of visit : 18/07/98. 168
