Boundary wall and gate piers : The gates and
piers are in a good state of repair though the
boundary wall requires urgent remedial action.
All of the boundary walls are covered by ivy,
surface weeds and rather large saplings. The
boundary walls must be sprayed soon and the
weeds and trees removed before greater damage
occurs. The boundary wall is also cracked
in its S. flank; this crack will need to be keyed
together.
Conservation Digest : Urgent details.
The kirkyard is not maintained to a very high
standard. The long grass must be cut on a more
regular basis and the weeds and trees removed
from within the yard, and on both sides of the
entire boundary wall. The crack in the S. flank
of the boundary wall must be repaired soon.
Interpretative Potential : Low.
This kirkyard exhibits little of particular merit,
though there are a good number of fine High
Victorian tombstones.
Access issues :The kirk and yard are located
on either side of the road running through the
village of Strachan.
Date of visit : 18/07/98.
The Old Kirk : There is now no trace of the
kirk, built in 1790, which replaced a kirk that
was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin in the 13 th
- century. The present kirk was built in 1867,
on the opposite side of the road, to a small rectangular
plan with rubble walls and a bellcote
crowning the entrance gable. The kirk appears
to be in very good order throughout.
Tombstones : There are approximately 14 recumbent
tombstones of which one is decorated
significantly. There are over one hundred upright
memorials dating from the mid-19 th - century
and many others executed in the flamboyant
high Victorian taste.
Many of the recumbent and upright tombstones
are suffering from their close proximity to rampaging
weeds and sapling trees.
