Area : <strong>Marr</strong> Parish : Auchindoir and Kearn Kirkyard : Auchindoir North Parish Kirk. N.G.R. : NJ 484 245 S.A.M. : Listing Category : Kirk Cat. B. (Removed from list) Interpretative Potential : Low. There is little of any particular interest within this kirk or yard. Access issues : The kirk is located on the r.h.s. of the road leading up to the kirk of St. Mary’s, Auchindoir, with no provision for parking cars. Date of visit : 27/07/98. Boundary wall and gate piers : The kirkyard is surrounded by a beech hedge which is in good order, though is in need of being clipped. The Old Kirk : The kirk of 1811 stands as a consolidated roofless ruin in the pointed Gothic style. The S. elevation is composed of three pointed Gothic openings, with a plain ballcapped birdcage bellcote crowning the W. gable. The door opening has a cracked lintel with a concrete lintel behind. The floor of the kirk is covered in loose stones and debris. The walls require to be re-pointed in places in order that the kirk should be consolidated further. A white marble memorial to a minister of the kirk lies unceremoniously against a wall internally. Tombstones : The small kirkyard, behind the kirk, is of late 20 th - century in date and contains no recumbent tombstones, though there are under one hundred upright tombstones. Conservation Digest : Not Urgent. All of the kirk’s internal walls require to be repointed and the interior could be brushed free of loose debris. 127
Area : <strong>Marr</strong> Parish : Auchindoir and Kearn Kirkyard : St. Mary’s Parish Kirk. N.G.R. : NJ 477 244 S.A.M. : Scheduled Ancient Monument. Listing Category : Kirk Cat. A, Yard Cat. B. Boundary wall and gate piers : The kirk is approached through two sets of gateways, all of which are in good order though the ball finials to the inner gateway are missing. The boundary wall is composed of rubble field stones and has fallen in several places. These need to be re-built, though the problem is not urgent. The Old Kirk : The kirk was originally built in the 13 th - century, though was thought to have replaced an earlier kirk. The orientation of the kirk is unusual in being rather more N./S. than the usual E./W.. The doorway in the S. façade is of a very fine Transitional design from the Norman to the Gothic. The nook shafts have been replaced recently, though the replacement shafts could have been measured more precisely; however, the sandstone match is excellent. There is a particularly fine skewputt carved with an armorial crest, initialled and dated 1638, on the S.E. corner of the kirk. The W. gable is crowned by a pedimented bellcote dated 1664. When the kirk was renovated in the 16 th -century, the sacrament house was added to the detriment of a small but very fine lancet window that was used to light the chancel. The sacrament house itself is composed of a single aumbry above which is a carved canopy crowned originally by a sculpture of Christ on the cross with the inscription I.N.R.I. above. The sides of the sacrament house are decorated with good crocketed pinnacles though the remaining decoration, of First-pointed Gothic character, is believed to be additional. There are numerous fine memorials internally along with other ecclesiastical relics. Tombstones : There are approximately 41 recumbent tombstones, several of which have been inappropriately lined up to form a path along the S. façade of the kirk. There are approximately 6 recumbent stones that are particularly well- decorated. An early 19 th - century sarcophagus memorial must have its top moved back into the proper position before it is vandalised any further. The mid-19 th - century enclosure on the S.W. boundary of the yard needs to be part of a programme of remedial works to restore the iron work and to secure the stone wall of the enclosure. All the recumbent tombstones must be brushed free of moss. Conservation Digest : Good order. The kirk is in excellent condition throughout, though in a marked contrast, all of the recumbent tombstones need to be brushed free of a considerable build-up of moss. The boundary wall needs to be rebuilt in places. Interpretative Potential : High. The kirk offers a fine array of exceptional 13 th - century architectural detail, though altered in the 16 th - and 17 th - centuries, that has been enthusiastically recorded in considerable depth by historians in the late 19 th - century. The S. doorway and house are truly stunning examples of their type. 128
