Area : Marr
Parish : Huntly
Kirkyard : St. Peter’s, Drumdelgie.
N.G.R. : NJ 487 410
S.A.M. :
Listing Category : Unlisted
Boundary wall and gate piers : The old iron
gate is still present though off its hinges and
rusting. It must be preserved. The gate piers
appear to be in good order though the entire
boundary wall is crumbling and must be consolidated
urgently.
The Old Kirk : All that remains of the old
kirk are four walls standing to a height of 1m
though the W. gable stands to an approximate
height of 2.5m. This crumbling gable has a large
rowan tree, about 20 years old, growing on the
very wall-head which threatens the structural
stability of the ruinous kirk.
The kirk is reputed to measure14.6m E. to W.
and 5.5m transversely, the walls being 0.9m
and 0.8m thick at the gables.
The old font is said to be preserved, though it
is not evident.
The entire kirk and yard are subsumed by an
incredibly dense thicket of weeds.
more memorials exist. It must be strimmed on a
regular basis thereafter to ensure that it never
returns to its present state.
The kirk and boundary wall require a remedial
programme of works to be implemented very
soon otherwise the entire site will soon become
a meaningless pile of rubble.
Interpretative Potential : Low.
There is little, at present, of any particular merit
within the yard though this is not to suggest
that nothing of interest will turn up during the
series of urgent repairs, or indeed that the yard
should continue to decay in such a manner.
Access issues :The kirkyard is positioned at
the bottom of a corn field, through which constant
access could be detrimental to the farmer’s
crop.
The weeds are so thick and the ground so uneven
within the yard that general walking about
it could be hazardous.
Date of visit : 13/08/98.
Tombstones : There are three recumbent tombstones
recorded, one being inside the kirk, none
of which is decorated. Three upright tombstones
of late 19 th - century in date were visible.
Conservation Digest : Urgent.
The entire kirk and yard are in a deplorable
state of repair throughout. Initially the entire
yard must be strimmed to determine how many
