Away from Home Care ®
Your HMO Coverage Goes With You
You have access to routine and urgent care when you’re
away from home for 90 consecutive days or more.
Whether you’re out of town on extended business,
travel or attending school out of the area, you’ll have
access to your HMO benefits.
Coverage Away from Home
You’ll have coverage when you see a provider of an
affiliated Blue Cross and Blue Shield HMO (Host HMO)
outside of the CareFirst BlueChoice, Inc. service area
(Maryland, Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia). When
you receive care, you’ll be considered a member of the
Host HMO and will be responsible for the copay benefits
under that plan. Your copay benefits may be different
than when you’re in the service area.
No Paperwork or Up-front Costs
You won’t have to complete claim forms and are only
responsible for out-of-pocket expenses such as copays,
deductibles, coinsurance, and the cost of non-covered
services. CareFirst BlueChoice, Inc. will communicate
this information to you when your Away from Home
Care application has been accepted
Enrolling in Away from Home Care
To ensure you and your family have ongoing access to
the care you need:
Contact Member Services at the number on your
ID card and ask for the Away from Home Care
Coordinator.
We’ll let you know if there’s a Host HMO in the area
where you’ll be staying and we’ll work with you to
complete an application.
The completed application will be sent to you for
your signature and date. Once it’s returned, we’ll
forward it to the Host HMO at your destination.
The Host HMO will provide an ID card, a primary
care provider (you may be asked to choose your
own primary care provider), and information on how
to access your benefits while using your Away from
Home Care.
When you need routine care, just call your Host
HMO primary care provider for an appointment.
