How can I keep speakers <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir allotted times so that enough time<br />

remains for Q&A?<br />

Use a timer that gives <strong>the</strong>m a signal when it is time <strong>to</strong> wrap up. <strong>Make</strong> sure<br />

<strong>the</strong> speakers know how much time <strong>the</strong>y have remaining when <strong>the</strong> signal<br />

goes off (five minutes remaining is a good rule of thumb). A low-tech<br />

solution might be <strong>to</strong> use a hand signal <strong>to</strong> indicate <strong>the</strong> number of minutes<br />

remaining or have <strong>the</strong> session modera<strong>to</strong>r move slowly <strong>to</strong>ward <strong>the</strong> podium.<br />

Finally, <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> debriefing. Set up a time <strong>to</strong> go over <strong>the</strong> training evaluations<br />

and discuss with staff what did or did not work and start <strong>to</strong> think<br />

about how <strong>to</strong> apply what you’ve learned <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> next training event (see page<br />

91, “Continuous Improvement: The Feedback Loop in Operation”).<br />

Consider sending out a CD containing <strong>the</strong> course material <strong>to</strong> your participants<br />

after <strong>the</strong> event. In addition <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> speakers’ slides, you can<br />

include any additional material <strong>the</strong> speakers brought. (<strong>Make</strong> sure you<br />

have permission from <strong>the</strong> copyright owner for any copyrighted material.)<br />
