With adjectives, the internal argument position and the external argument
restr may be linked in two possible ways. With \active" adjectives, i.e. deverbal
adjectives whose rst argument is being predicated on, the external
argument is copied from the rst argument and with "passive" adjectives the
external argument is coindexed with the second argument. In underived adjectives
it is the second argument which is coindexed with the external argument
position, but with derived adjectives, the base of the derivation decides whether
the rst or second argument becomes the external argument. An example of
an "active" adjective istheFrench adjective meditatif which means qui medite
(who meditates) (153). A passive adjective is the French adjective applicable,
which isderived from the French verb appliquer and means qui peut ^etre applique
(which can be applied) (154). The lexical entries of these adjectives are
coded together with the verbs they are derived from.
