IES celebrates 46th anniversary with
new initiatives
IES celebrated its 46th anniversary on 28 September 2012 at
the IES Annual Dinner held at the Compass West Ballroom,
Resorts World Sentosa, with some of the industry’s most eminent
engineers and IES members in attendance. Deputy Prime Minister
(DPM) Teo Chee Hean, Coordinating Minister for National
Security and Minister for Home Affairs, was the Guest-of-Honour.
At the dinner, DPM Teo announced the launch of the IES
Aerospace Engineering Chapter by IES to support and
strengthen Singapore’s position as the regional aerospace hub.
The chapter will raise the profile of local aerospace engineers
and help them achieve higher standing globally, and encourage
students to aspire to become aerospace engineers in the future.
This new Chapter will also develop critical mass to support
professional development upgrading programmes.
In addition, DPM Teo announced the launch of the IES Technology
Entrepreneurship Ecosystem. This will come complete with
technology sources, funding, mentorship, incubation facilities
and networking opportunities, to encourage more engineers to
start technology enterprises, building upon their expertise and
innovations.
“IES has marked the past 46 years with significant achievements
that have contributed to the advancement of engineering in
Singapore. As we celebrate yet another anniversary, we are not
resting on our laurels but have introduced initiatives that will
create major positive impact to the engineering community.
We are confident that the new IES Aerospace Engineering
Chapter and the Technology Entrepreneurship Ecosystem are
highly relevant and beneficial to both the industry and the
individual, and will buttress the ability of engineers to transform
our economy and our lives,” said Prof Chou Siaw Kiang,
President of IES.
The launch of the ‘Certified Engineer’ programme was also
announced, targeting engineers who are in fields that do not
warrant a need for them to be registered as Professional Engineers.
“The ‘Certified Engineer’ title will be a quality mark earned by
engineers of diverse engineering disciplines and will be an official
endorsement of their experience, expertise and practising
competence, and an accreditation of the individual’s professional
standing. IES hopes to work with all engineers to establish this
new title as society’s recognition of an engineer’s professional
expertise and experience across the sectors of our economy,”
said Prof Chou.
Prof Chou also shared with the dinner attendees that IES will
be hosting the World Federation of Engineering Organisations
(WFEO) General Assembly in 2013. In conjunction with the
General Assembly, IES will be organising the inaugural World
Engineers’ Summit (WES) 2013 which will be held in Singapore
every two years.
Focusing on the theme ‘Innovative and Sustainable Solutions to
Climate Change’, WES 2013 will gather more than 2000 engineers
globally from multiple disciplines of engineering, financiers, policy
makers, small and medium enterprises, legal advisors, scientists,
researchers, MNCs and institutions to congregate, discuss and
exchange ideas on climate change issues.
A key highlight of the IES Annual Dinner was the presentation
of certificates to the 74 elected Fellows of the Singapore
Academy of Engineering (SAEng) by DPM Teo, a patron of the
group. The presentation highlighted the thought leadership roles
that this esteemed group will play in Singapore’s quest to meet
the challenges of the new millennium and to build a vibrant
engineering community in Singapore by leveraging on the rich
experience and expertise of the group’s members.
In line with its objectives to encourage brilliant young minds to
pursue engineering as a lifelong career, IES also presented the
IES Gold Medal to 17 top engineering students who are ranked
first in general proficiency throughout their course of study from
the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological
University (NTU); and the IES-Yayasan Mendaki Scholarship.
