Midani, who expresses himself as open to any serious professional project for the evolution of music, also expresses a strong interest in Brazilian hip-hop.“I think it’s fantastic!” he says. “It’s the first time that someone from the favelas can give voice to their anger and disdain with social injustices. It’s a very important political discourse.” André Midani believes that the future of the music industry is, inevitably, independent. The arrogance of executives and the lack of agility inherent in the major labels has been a principal factor in the crisis of the last decade. Midani believes that one root problem has been the replacement of music experts by financial experts. They ambushed themselves. “In their quest for quick profits, the industry put their focus on the music and not the artist. But it’s the artists who has the longer lifespan.” Another factor was the lack of understanding with regard to the boom of home recording. “Rather than fighting with the companies supplying the recording equipment, they should have lobbied the government for taxes on blank CDs.” The final blow against the “big five” was piracy on a masive scale. According to Midani, “the record companies didn’t invest enough to combat the piracy industry– and they didn’t invest since the beginning.” Unles the majors begin to generate some type of profit from downloads and ring tones, Midani sees them slowly moving out of the market. “The multinationals don’t work only with music,” says Midani. “They wil sel their record companies”, he afirms. “This is not a temporary dificulty. The problems are big and structural.” Midani believes that this is a favorable time for independent artists and labels. “They are below what I refer to as the radar– the radar of the pirates, the radar of downloads. They don’t deal in the curency of succes. They work with sophisticated catalogues and new projects dedicated to a niche public.” So why can’t the majors do likewise? “The transformations for the multinationals would be enormous; in fact, it would be too big an undertaking for them that they just don’t have the capacity to change.” Midani sees “a radical transformation” ahead for the relationship between the artist, public and record company. “The tendency is for the labels to be smaler in size but catering to al aspects of the artist’s profesional life –the record,
publishing, merchandising, concerts, etc.” For André Midani, the Brazilian music industry still has a long journey to make before it makes its mark internationally. Local music will only have more international exposure through the joint efforts of the private sector with governmental policies. “We need a body which dedicates itself 100% to this goal.”
