Facts & Figures 2003-2004 By David MacLoughling The Brazilian Association of Record Producers (ABPD), which represents most of the major labels in the country, recently published its report on the state of the local market. Their findings show an increase of 25% in sales figures over that of the same period in the previous year. According to the document, in the first quarter of 2004 there was a monetary increase of 39,2% and an increase of 35,9% in units. 2003 represented a difficult year for the local industry. The fall in sales was attributed to piracy, the principal problem in the sector which accounts for 52% of the market, along with the economic recession and and illegal downloading. The State of São Paulo is the region most affected. 7 million CDs were apprended throughout 2003. The authorities carried out 1,018 actions against piracy throughout the country. 142 people were arrested. In second place comes the State of Paraná with around 5.8 million CDs seized; in third place Rio de Janeiro with 1.3 million CDs; Pernambuco in fourth place, with 960,000 CDs, and in fifth place Distrito Federal with 700,000 CDs. In 2002, the APDIF registered the apprehension of 12.5 million blank and pirate CDs. The annual report by the ABPD shows that piracy jumped from 3% of the market in 1997 to 59% in 2002, which represents 115 million pirate CDs sold. In compensation, the DVD market experienced an increase of 21,4% in sales (a 37,2% increase in financial terms). 42% consisted of local productions and 58% for international productions.
According to the IFPI, Brazil is in 9 th position in the world ranking for sale of DVDs (2% of the world market). In relation to 2002, the number of national DVDs released in 2003 experienced the same fall as that of CDs. 160 Brazilian DVDs were released in 2002 while only 77 were released in 2003.
