<strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Show</strong> <strong>Executive</strong>’s Exposition Forecast<strong>in</strong>g Board<br />
Tim McGill,<br />
CEO, Hargrove Inc.<br />
“Most shows <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> First Quarter seemed to average<br />
a slight <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> attendance from <strong>the</strong> previous year,<br />
roughly 3% to 4%, depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry sector. Net<br />
square footage has been up. This is due ma<strong>in</strong>ly to two<br />
factors: (1) Previous exhibitors contract<strong>in</strong>g more space,<br />
and (2) The <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> exhibitor base seems to be<br />
exceed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> attrition from non-return<strong>in</strong>g exhibitors.<br />
“Our custom exhibit-build<strong>in</strong>g division has a strong<br />
and solid pipel<strong>in</strong>e for <strong>the</strong> balance of <strong>the</strong> year. While that<br />
division is considered a lagg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dicator, we expected to<br />
see a soften<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pipel<strong>in</strong>e but that has not occurred.<br />
Our events division is cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g to see <strong>in</strong>creased<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess. That segment is typically <strong>the</strong> first to contract<br />
but that has not occurred ei<strong>the</strong>r. We rema<strong>in</strong> confident <strong>in</strong><br />
our expectations for trade shows, however, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
sectors served will <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>the</strong> strength of each show.<br />
But even some of our f<strong>in</strong>ancial shows have seen and are<br />
predict<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>ued growth this year.<br />
“While it appears that <strong>the</strong>re is a consensus that <strong>the</strong><br />
U.S. economy is obviously headed toward or already <strong>in</strong> a<br />
recession, our numbers and forecasts are contrary.”<br />

“The trade show <strong>in</strong>dustry rema<strong>in</strong>s healthy <strong>in</strong> this<br />
challeng<strong>in</strong>g economy. While <strong>in</strong>dividual events are<br />
experienc<strong>in</strong>g a broad range of registration trend<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
registration for U.S. trade shows <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> aggregate has<br />
rema<strong>in</strong>ed stable from 2007 to <strong>2008</strong>.”<br />
