‘D<strong>in</strong>ner with Strangers’ − Gets Attendees Away<br />
From Madden<strong>in</strong>g Crowd<br />
By Hil Anderson, senior editor<br />
Las Vegas, NV – The popular “D<strong>in</strong>ner<br />
with Strangers” network<strong>in</strong>g event at<br />
<strong>the</strong> annual Exhibitor <strong>Show</strong> <strong>in</strong> Las Vegas<br />
guarantees that for at least one night,<br />
attendees won’t feel like <strong>the</strong>y are alone <strong>in</strong><br />
a crowd. The concept can be replicated at<br />
any event, giv<strong>in</strong>g newcomers, <strong>in</strong>troverts<br />
or those who prefer smaller group<br />
discussions a haven for network<strong>in</strong>g so<br />
that <strong>the</strong>y don’t get lost <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shuffle of<br />
<strong>the</strong> show.<br />
Augment<strong>in</strong>g Receptions<br />
Receptions may be “can’t miss”<br />
events, but <strong>the</strong>y also can be simply too<br />
large and noisy – not to mention lack<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> places to sit down – to produce<br />
much <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> way of solid network<strong>in</strong>g<br />
among <strong>in</strong>dustry colleagues. “D<strong>in</strong>ner with<br />
Strangers” is a means of augment<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> receptions. It gives attendees an<br />
opportunity to get toge<strong>the</strong>r with a handful<br />
of people for a civilized meal and a more<br />
<strong>in</strong>-depth conversation.<br />
A Whirlw<strong>in</strong>d of Activity<br />
At 76,000 net square feet, and with<br />
an overall crowd of about 6,000 <strong>in</strong><br />
attendance, <strong>the</strong> <strong>2008</strong> Exhibitor <strong>Show</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
February was a whirlw<strong>in</strong>d of activity.<br />
Moreover, it was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> midst of <strong>the</strong> even<br />
larger human hurricane at <strong>the</strong> Mandalay<br />
Bay Resort & Cas<strong>in</strong>o and <strong>the</strong> Las Vegas<br />
Your Table is Wait<strong>in</strong>g. One of <strong>the</strong> many<br />
restaurants on <strong>the</strong> Mandalay Bay property where<br />
“D<strong>in</strong>ner with Strangers” is held.<br />
Strip. It would be<br />
easy for newcomers<br />
to feel a bit<br />
overwhelmed or at<br />
least have difficulty<br />
gett<strong>in</strong>g to know<br />
anyone beyond<br />
<strong>the</strong> handshake<br />
and <strong>the</strong> standard<br />
abbreviated<br />
reception<br />
pleasantries.<br />
“We wanted<br />
to make sure that<br />
we had a way for<br />
people to meet<br />
each o<strong>the</strong>r outside<br />
<strong>the</strong> receptions,” said Elly Reister, CMO<br />
of Exhibitor Magaz<strong>in</strong>e Group and <strong>the</strong><br />
organizer of <strong>the</strong> popular d<strong>in</strong>ners. “Unless<br />
someone is fairly aggressive about go<strong>in</strong>g<br />
out and meet<strong>in</strong>g new people, receptions<br />
can turn <strong>in</strong>to clusters of people who work<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r or already know each o<strong>the</strong>r.”<br />
Easy to Organize<br />
The show organizer makes <strong>the</strong><br />
restaurant reservations and can coord<strong>in</strong>ate<br />
delegate participation onl<strong>in</strong>e or <strong>in</strong> a<br />
low-tech manner via a sign-up sheet <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> registration area. Interested attendees<br />
choose <strong>the</strong> restaurant that sounds <strong>the</strong> best<br />
to <strong>the</strong>m, sign up and <strong>the</strong>n meet <strong>the</strong> rest<br />
of <strong>the</strong> group at an appo<strong>in</strong>ted time and<br />
place. “Each group meets <strong>in</strong> a different<br />
restaurant but all of <strong>the</strong>m are <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong><br />
Mandalay Bay facility so that nobody<br />
has to travel,” Reister told <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Show</strong><br />
<strong>Executive</strong>.<br />
The plan for <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g is up to <strong>the</strong><br />
participants. “D<strong>in</strong>ner with Strangers” is<br />
not designed for sales pitches or order<br />
writ<strong>in</strong>g, but ra<strong>the</strong>r a more low-key level<br />
of personal network<strong>in</strong>g. “We wouldn’t<br />
prohibit anybody from talk<strong>in</strong>g shop<br />
<strong>in</strong> order to f<strong>in</strong>d out what <strong>the</strong>y have<br />
<strong>in</strong> common, but it is <strong>in</strong>tended to be<br />
Look<strong>in</strong>g for Clues. A pair of attendees ponder which group to jo<strong>in</strong> for “D<strong>in</strong>ner<br />
with Strangers” at <strong>the</strong> <strong>2008</strong> Exhibitor <strong>Show</strong> <strong>in</strong> Las Vegas.<br />
completely social,” said Reister.<br />
About 250 people signed up for<br />
“D<strong>in</strong>ner with Strangers” this year,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g attendees, exhibitors, suppliers<br />
and even some of <strong>the</strong> conference<br />
speakers. The program will likely be<br />
expanded even fur<strong>the</strong>r next year to<br />
accommodate 300. Reister said that would<br />
require f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g more restaurants ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />
than <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> size of each party.<br />
“We’re go<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> number of<br />
groups next year to try to keep it to a<br />
cozier group,” she said. “Once you get to<br />
10 or 12 people <strong>in</strong> a group, it is harder to<br />
meet everyone at <strong>the</strong> table.”<br />
Reister said she would look to keep<br />
<strong>the</strong> event at restaurants that are relatively<br />
modestly priced – less than $50 for a<br />
meal. “We don’t want to stra<strong>in</strong> anyone’s<br />
per diem,” she said.<br />
“D<strong>in</strong>ner with Strangers” is also<br />
not subject to any pressures to make it<br />
anyth<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>r than a social event. No<br />
one from show management rides herd<br />
on <strong>the</strong> group and <strong>the</strong>re are no surveys<br />
or feedback forms to fill out. It is purely<br />
an opportunity for colleagues to make<br />
connections that will last a few hours or a<br />
lifetime.<br />
