trademarks, patents and what can be done<br />
to protect <strong>the</strong>m. It also delivers special<br />
bullet<strong>in</strong>s to exhibitors that expla<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
rules and regulations cover<strong>in</strong>g IPR. The<br />
bullet<strong>in</strong>s clearly outl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> consequences<br />
for those who violate ano<strong>the</strong>r’s rights. In<br />
addition, SEMA stepped up enforcement<br />
of show rules that prohibit <strong>the</strong> display of<br />
products, packag<strong>in</strong>g or trademarks that<br />
<strong>in</strong>fr<strong>in</strong>ge on <strong>the</strong> IPR of o<strong>the</strong>rs. SEMA also<br />
conducts onl<strong>in</strong>e web<strong>in</strong>ars on <strong>the</strong> topic to<br />
help members understand how to protect<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir own <strong>in</strong>tellectual property.<br />
NAMM <strong>Show</strong> Will Impose Restrictions on<br />
Violators<br />
NAMM, <strong>the</strong> International Music<br />
Products Association, has a two-page<br />
IPR policy on its website that <strong>in</strong>forms<br />
companies that both membership<br />
and exhibitor applications conta<strong>in</strong><br />
legally b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g language concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />
IPR. It also specifies that it will not<br />
take sides <strong>in</strong> disputes, but is will<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
impose restrictions on members and/or<br />
exhibitors dur<strong>in</strong>g a NAMM show if <strong>the</strong><br />
organization is reasonably certa<strong>in</strong> that<br />
an <strong>in</strong>tended use would violate ano<strong>the</strong>r’s<br />
rights. NAMM also outl<strong>in</strong>es its own IPR<br />
relative to its shows and outl<strong>in</strong>es what<br />
members may and may not use.<br />
Stopp<strong>in</strong>g Violators <strong>in</strong><br />
Their Tracks<br />
Wallace said <strong>the</strong> best th<strong>in</strong>g trade show<br />
organizers might do once <strong>the</strong>y know an<br />
exhibitor has violated IPR regulations is<br />
to prevent <strong>the</strong> violator from return<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
<strong>the</strong> show. “The more often that happens,<br />
<strong>the</strong> more careful people will have to be,”<br />
he said.<br />
But even as enforcement improves,<br />
Witt said communication is just as<br />
important. “The more we talk about it<br />
and communicate, <strong>the</strong> better it is for <strong>the</strong><br />
community of those who respect IPR,”<br />
he said.<br />

Patent protection has always<br />
been a concern for U.S. organizers.<br />
Photography is often restricted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> prospect of uniformed police<br />
enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> show floor, clos<strong>in</strong>g down<br />
booths and seiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> products<br />

patent <strong>in</strong>fr<strong>in</strong>gement, as is <strong>the</strong><br />
case under German law.<br />
Schafer’s presentation,<br />

German <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Show</strong><br />
Organizers Are Deal<strong>in</strong>g with IPR and<br />
Copyright <strong>Issue</strong>s,” will look at <strong>the</strong><br />
steps German organizers have taken to<br />
prevent a repeat of <strong>the</strong> CeBIT drama<br />

is <strong>the</strong> keynote speaker. He will<br />
discuss <strong>the</strong> value of stand-alone<br />
corporate events and how “deviant<br />
leadership” pr<strong>in</strong>ciples can help<br />
exhibition producers keep <strong>the</strong>ir shows<br />
competitive with corporate events.<br />
• Glenn Hansen, president of BPA<br />
Worldwide, who will moderate a<br />
