most reliable way to obtain the respiration rate. It is<br />

preferable to have the animal in the standing position,<br />

as abnormalities can be modified by recumbency<br />

and may be missed. On a cold winter’s day the<br />

respiratory rate can be counted accurately by observing<br />

the plume <strong>of</strong> condensation from the nostrils on<br />

expiration.<br />

Conditions causing respiratory<br />

disease<br />

Conditions <strong>of</strong> calves<br />

These may include enzootic pneumonia, infectious<br />

bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), parainfluenza 3 (PI3),<br />

respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), bovine viral diarrhoea<br />

(BVD), mycoplasmas, Pasteurella and foreign<br />

body pneumonia.<br />

Conditions <strong>of</strong> growing cattle<br />

These may include IBR, RSV, lungworm, Pasteurella<br />

and Haemophilus.<br />

Conditions <strong>of</strong> adult cattle<br />

These may include chronic suppurative pneumonia,<br />

caudal vena caval syndrome, tuberculosis, fog fever,<br />

diffuse fibrosing alveolitis (bovine farmer’s lung),<br />

pasteurellosis and lungworm.<br />
