CHAPTER 5
Enlarged submandibular
lymph node
Irregular outline
of mandible caused
by tooth root activity
Lesion of actinomycosis
(irregular orifice with
thick pus emerging)
Figure 5.4 Ventrolateral view of mandibles
and proximal throat of cow.
Figure 5.5 Drooping of ears in depressed calf.
has been seen in some cases of bovine spongioform
encephalopathy (BSE). Increased muscle
tone with stiffness of the ears is seen in tetanus.
Despite their dirty and dusty environment, otitis
externa and foreign bodies in the ears of cattle are
extremely uncommon. If aural discharge is present,
the ear canal can be inspected using an auriscope or a
small fibreoptic endoscope. Deafness may be caused
by damage to the auditory part of the 8th cranial
(vestibulocochlear) nerve. Lacerations in the ear are
frequently seen and are often caused by metal tags
catching on hooks and other objects. They are then
pulled out, tearing the ear. Local infection may be
seen around recently inserted ear tags, especially
in calves. Aural haematomata are extremely rare in
cattle.
