passing a stomach tube and decompressing any gas<br />

that may be present. The clinical evaluation is then<br />

repeated. A collapsed dorsal sac <strong>of</strong> the rumen can<br />

produce a ping with a lower pitch. The rumen movements<br />

may be normal or reduced in amplitude and<br />

frequency.<br />

Further confirmation can be achieved by abomasocentesis.<br />

To perform an abomasocentesis, the<br />

skin in the intercostal space over the ping is antiseptically<br />

prepared and a lumbar-spinal needle quickly<br />

inserted. Asample <strong>of</strong> abomasal fluid is withdrawn by<br />

syringe. The pH <strong>of</strong> the sample can then be measured<br />
