• Significant contributor to the science <strong>of</strong> organic chemistry; focused on pericyclic reactions and total synthesis<br />

whose research involved more than 50 gradu<strong>at</strong>e students and a similar number <strong>of</strong> postdoctoral fellows<br />

• Held the Charles F. Houghton Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship in <strong>Chemistry</strong> from 1981-2000<br />

• Female gradu<strong>at</strong>e students in chemistry won numerous fellowships, and 6 out <strong>of</strong> 25 in the entering gradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

program were female<br />

• Introduced short courses on electrochemistry and polymer chemistry, with lecturers from industry; well<br />

<strong>at</strong>tended by faculty, students, and approxim<strong>at</strong>ely 60 people from local corpor<strong>at</strong>ions and colleges<br />

• <strong>Chemistry</strong> Department hosted Third Conference on Cooper<strong>at</strong>ive Advances in Science and Technology,<br />

cohosted by Eastman Kodak Company and the <strong>University</strong> in 1981; sponsored by the Council for Chemical<br />

Research, an organiz<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> approxim<strong>at</strong>ely 40 companies and 130 departments <strong>of</strong> chemistry and chemical<br />

engineering; 240 participants<br />

• Hired numerous senior-level faculty, including Robert Boeckman, David Whitten, and Shaul Mukamel<br />

• Hired William Jones in inorganic chemistry, and Joseph Dinnocenzo in organic chemistry<br />
