• Acquired a 500-MHz NMR spectrometer with help from Eastman Kodak Company<br />

• Invested a major effort in developing a vision for <strong>Chemistry</strong> in <strong>Rochester</strong> in the 21st century<br />

• After eleven years, in 2000, NSF funding ended for the Science and Technology Center for Photoinduced<br />

Charge Transfer. However, it continues as a vigorous research center <strong>at</strong> the <strong>University</strong> under its Director<br />

Joseph Dinnocenzo.<br />

• Despite a <strong>University</strong>-wide cutback in faculty, developed a str<strong>at</strong>egic plan for hiring new faculty members<br />

• Recruited Todd Krauss, who now spearheads efforts in m<strong>at</strong>erial science and nanotechnology<br />

• Recruited P<strong>at</strong>rick Holland in inorganic chemistry, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rochester</strong>’s traditional strengths<br />

• Department received a large bequest from Alan Ewart, Ph.D. alumnus in nuclear chemistry, which allowed<br />

<strong>Chemistry</strong> to establish a fellowship fund for excellent gradu<strong>at</strong>e students<br />

• Institutionalized the Peer-led Team Learning Workshop Program<br />

• Completed Central Instrument<strong>at</strong>ion Facility construction in basement <strong>of</strong> Hutchison Hall; houses high-field<br />

NMR and mass spectrometers<br />

• In 1997 Robert Boeckman and Andrew Kende were appointed associ<strong>at</strong>e editors to the Journal <strong>of</strong> Organic<br />

<strong>Chemistry</strong>; Boeckman continues to serve until the present day. Kende completed his term in 2002.<br />
