• Victor Chambers’ chairmanship lasted for three decades.<br />

• In 1925 became the first Charles F. Houghton Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chemistry</strong>, a pr<strong>of</strong>essorship he held until 1939<br />

• Collabor<strong>at</strong>ed with Ralph Helmkamp to start the Ph.D. Program in the <strong>Chemistry</strong> Department in 1927<br />

• Dean <strong>of</strong> Gradu<strong>at</strong>e Studies for six years<br />

• Promoted introduction <strong>of</strong> Ph.D. programs throughout the <strong>University</strong><br />

• In 1916, Victor J. Chambers set wheels in motion to secure a charter for <strong>Rochester</strong> from Sigma Xi, an honor<br />

society which recognizes superior achievement in science.<br />

• Recruited D. Stanley Tarbell<br />

• In 1927, under President Rhees, ground was broken for the River Campus on the banks <strong>of</strong> the Genesee River<br />

• After his de<strong>at</strong>h, the Victor J. Chambers Lectureship was established in his honor<br />

• Victor J. Chambers is also remembered by a residence hall bearing his name in Hill Court on the River<br />

Campus.<br />
