• His appointment prompted the establishment <strong>of</strong> a separ<strong>at</strong>e department <strong>of</strong> chemistry <strong>at</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />
• At the <strong>University</strong> taught <strong>Chemistry</strong>, as well as Geology, Zoology, and Physics<br />
• Established the first chemistry labor<strong>at</strong>ory in the basement <strong>of</strong> Anderson Hall, used by students as well as<br />
<strong>Rochester</strong> physicians, pharmacists, mechanics, and farmers<br />
• In 1887, established a building exclusively for <strong>Chemistry</strong><br />
• Chemist to the Board <strong>of</strong> W<strong>at</strong>er Commissioners <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rochester</strong> and to the New York St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong> Health<br />
• Acting President <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> for two years<br />
• Established the <strong>Rochester</strong> Microscopical Society in 1879; In 1881 became the first president <strong>of</strong> the society<br />
• His importance to the <strong>University</strong> is commemor<strong>at</strong>ed by L<strong>at</strong>timore Hall, a building th<strong>at</strong> up until 1972 was<br />
devoted to teaching and research in chemistry on the River Campus. Today L<strong>at</strong>timore Hall houses the<br />
Deans’ <strong>of</strong>fices, as well as various humanities departments.<br />
• Several institutions conferred honorary degrees on L<strong>at</strong>timore; he was a charter member <strong>of</strong> the American<br />
Chemical Society and a fellow <strong>of</strong> the American Associ<strong>at</strong>ion for the Advancement <strong>of</strong> Science.<br />
