• In 2003, was named the Marshall D. G<strong>at</strong>es, Jr. Chair in <strong>Chemistry</strong> in honor or Marshall D. G<strong>at</strong>es, who was a<br />
member <strong>of</strong> the faculty from 1949 to 1981; in 2006, received the ACS Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award.<br />
• Acquired 500-MHz, 400-MHz, and 300-MHz NMR spectrometers, and single molecule/confocal microscope<br />
• Oversaw an external str<strong>at</strong>egic review <strong>of</strong> the Department to determine the best p<strong>at</strong>h for growth<br />
• Raised more than $2.5 million in endowed funds from alumni<br />
• During an austere period <strong>of</strong> Federal grant support, established an environment in which faculty raised<br />
substantial research funding, resulting in the steady growth <strong>of</strong> grants per year; faculty now receive more<br />
than $4 million in grants per year<br />
• Assisted in developing str<strong>at</strong>egic plans, including the role <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Chemistry</strong> Department, for the energy,<br />
nanobiology, and neuroscience initi<strong>at</strong>ives<br />
• Initi<strong>at</strong>ed lectureship and pr<strong>of</strong>essorship in honor <strong>of</strong> Andrew Kende<br />
• Peer-led Workshop Educ<strong>at</strong>ional fund in honor <strong>of</strong> Jack Kampmeier was established in 2005<br />
• Since 1995, the Department has experienced a 40% turnover in faculty, mainly due to retirements and new<br />
hires. Since 2000, the Department has hired seven assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essors, and as <strong>of</strong> 2003, the Department has<br />
successfully retained senior faculty<br />
