• Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chemistry</strong> and N<strong>at</strong>ural Philosophy; received four honorary degrees in divinity<br />
• Was the first <strong>University</strong> scientist: a chemist, botanist, geologist, meteorologist, and clergyman<br />
• Scientific studies expanded in 1862, when Dewey recommended th<strong>at</strong> the <strong>University</strong> acquire a<br />
cabinet <strong>of</strong> minerals and fossils from a young <strong>Rochester</strong> n<strong>at</strong>uralist, Henry A. Ward.<br />
• Recorded temper<strong>at</strong>ure, barometric pressure, precipit<strong>at</strong>ion, winds, storms, comets, meteors, and<br />
auroras; his we<strong>at</strong>her sheets are archived in Rush Rhees Library and cover more than 30 years<br />
