• In 1989, hosted the First Annual Charles A. Dana Found<strong>at</strong>ion Symposium<br />
• Founding Director and driving force for the establishment <strong>of</strong> the NSF-sponsored Science and Technology<br />
Center for Photoinduced Charge Transfer, a collabor<strong>at</strong>ive effort between the Department, Eastman Kodak, and<br />
Xerox. It was awarded in 1989 as one <strong>of</strong> eleven centers, the only one in chemistry in the US, and the first such<br />
center in New York St<strong>at</strong>e. NSF funding renewed in 1991 for an additional five years <strong>of</strong> support <strong>at</strong> $9,600,000.<br />
• In 1990, hosted the First Annual Symposium <strong>of</strong> the Center for Photoinduced Charge Transfer, where 33 papers<br />
and 35 posters were presented to 160 participants from around the world<br />
• Shaul Mukamel becomes associ<strong>at</strong>e editor for Chemical Physics Letters in 1990, a position he holds to this day<br />
• Grants from the Dana and Pew Found<strong>at</strong>ions enabled new initi<strong>at</strong>ives in undergradu<strong>at</strong>e educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
• Established new outreach programs to secondary school chemistry educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
• The Department was one <strong>of</strong> the top ten chemistry departments in the country in the amount <strong>of</strong> federal<br />
research funds per faculty member<br />
• In 1991, was awarded the ACS Award in Colloid or Surface <strong>Chemistry</strong> for his work in monolayer assemblies<br />
• Recruited Esther Conwell and Samir Farid as research pr<strong>of</strong>essors; hired Eric Kool, whose appointment was the<br />
first in bioorganic chemistry, and complemented the program in biophysical chemistry<br />
