Fay Lomax Cook: Celebrating 16 Years<br />
Distinguished Public <strong>Policy</strong> Lectures<br />
IPR’s Distinguished Public <strong>Policy</strong> Lectures feature those who<br />
straddle policymaking and academia, such as Undersecretary <strong>of</strong><br />
Commerce Rebecca Blank and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor James Comer.<br />
CUAPR Becomes IPR<br />
One <strong>of</strong> Cook’s first acts as director was changing the<br />
organization’s name from the Center <strong>for</strong> Urban Affairs and<br />
<strong>Policy</strong> <strong>Research</strong> to the shorter <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Policy</strong> <strong>Research</strong>.<br />
Cook welcomes Yale University’s James Comer who was the 1997 IPR<br />
Distinguished Public <strong>Policy</strong> Lecturer.<br />
Enhancing <strong>Research</strong> Programs<br />
IPR’s endeavour to remain relevant in its research has resulted<br />
in the launch <strong>of</strong> two major new program areas in the last seven<br />
years: Cells to Society (C2S) in 2005, and the Q-Center in 2006.<br />

Expanding Dissemination<br />
Cook assisted in the creation <strong>of</strong> the IPR policy research briefings<br />
in 2003 that highlight how faculty research can be applied to<br />
current policy issues <strong>for</strong> a broad audience.<br />

Undergraduate Summer RA Program<br />
IPR started its Summer Undergraduate <strong>Research</strong> Assistants<br />
Program in 1998, which Cook was instrumental in launching.<br />
Concluding its 14th year, it welcomes 20 to 25 students annually.<br />

Colloquia<br />
One <strong>of</strong> IPR’s greatest traditions—its signature Monday<br />
colloquium series, which Cook instituted—will be renamed the<br />
“IPR Fay Lomax Cook Monday Colloquium Series.”<br />
