Goals at a glance for <strong>2020</strong><br />

5.0 By <strong>2020</strong>, IR would strive to<br />

a) Establish quality <strong>of</strong> service benchmarked to the best <strong>of</strong> the Railway systems in the world.<br />

b) Expand its route network at the rate <strong>of</strong> 2500 kms per annum. By <strong>2020</strong>, 25,000 kms <strong>of</strong> new line will be<br />

added and almost the entire network (barring the hill and heritage railways) would be in Broad Gauge.<br />

This would include completion <strong>of</strong> the pending shelf <strong>of</strong> new line projects <strong>of</strong> 11985 kms. More than<br />

30,000 kms <strong>of</strong> route would be <strong>of</strong> double/multiple lines. Electrification <strong>of</strong> 14,000 kms <strong>of</strong> routes would<br />

take the total length <strong>of</strong> electrified route to 33,000 kms. This would include all inter- metro links and the<br />

other busy corridors.<br />

c) Have more than 6000 kms for quadrupled lines with segregation <strong>of</strong> passenger and freight services into<br />

separate double-line corridors. This shall include Delhi-Kolkata, Delhi-Mumbai, Kolkata-Mumbai and<br />

Delhi-Chennai routes. All these routes would have separate dedicated freight corridors and highspeed<br />

passenger corridors.<br />

d) Raise speeds <strong>of</strong> passenger trains from 130 (110) kmph to 160-200 kmph on segregated routes and<br />

speed <strong>of</strong> freight trains from 60-70 kmph to 100 kmph.<br />

e) Virtually attain a state <strong>of</strong> "availability on demand" in freight, passenger and parcel services.<br />

f) Design and deliver targeted services for transport <strong>of</strong> perishables, agri-produce and products <strong>of</strong> small<br />

and medium enterprises (SMEs) such as auto-hubs and others similar clusters.<br />

g) Target to achieve Zero accidents.<br />

h) Target to achieve Zero failures in equipments.<br />

i) Utilize at least 10% <strong>of</strong> its energy requirement from renewable sources and institute a foolpro<strong>of</strong> ec<strong>of</strong>riendly<br />

waste management system.<br />

j) Complete 4 high-speed corridors <strong>of</strong> (2000 kms) and plan development <strong>of</strong> 8 others.<br />
