European, world and Olympic champions in this field. The
view from the seaside is fascinating and impressive: with a
single glance you take in the relaxing waters of the lake, the
ridge of dunes, kilometres of the often deserted beach
where the famous novelist Alberto Moravia liked to take
walks, the sea, the ever-present vegetation, and the massive
Circeo Promontory which dominates the coastline from
the southwest. Sabaudia is the headquarters of the
management of the Circeo National Park, with a Visitors
Centre, the Natural History Museum and the “Claudia
Ortese” Pontine Marshes Education and Health
Documentation Centre. Although it is a new city, Sabaudia
has important remains of the centuries prior to its
foundation: the13th-century Sanctuary of Santa Maria della
Sorresca; the Palazzo di Domiziano, one of the most
important archaeological complexes in southern Latium; the
so-called Fonte di Lucullo (Lucullus’ Spring); the Faberio
Murena pool (also called Lucullus’ pool), which is fed by the
sea. A visit to the Sea and Coast Museum completes our
historic-cultural tour of Saubadia. Tourism in Saubadia is
based on its small and large hotels, all of which are first-rate,
or at least very good, the campgrounds along the coast, the
many vacation villas and apartments, and lastly a programme
of events and festivals aimed at a vast range of tastes.
Ruderwettkämpfe trainieren: aus dieser Schule gingen
italienische, europäische, Weltmeister und Olympiasieger
hervor. Besonders reizvoll und faszinierend ist das
Panorama, das man von der Strandpromenade aus
genießt: mit einem Blick erfaßt man das stille Seewasser,
die lange Dünenschnur, Kilometer des häufig einsamen
Strands, an dem Alberto Moravia lange Wanderungen
unternahm, das allgegenwärtige Grün und das Massiv
des Circeo-Vorgebirges, das den Südosten beherrscht.
Sabaudia ist Sitz der Leitung der Naturoase Parco
nazionale del Circeo, mit dem Besuchercenter, dem
naturwissenschaftlichen Museum und der Zentralstelle
für die Dokumentation über die Schulbildung und das
Gesundheitswesen in den Pontinischen Sümpfen
„Claudia Ortese“. Obgleich noch sehr jung, beherbergt
Sabaudia bedeutende historische Zeugnisse einer Zeit, die
seiner Gründung um Jahrhunderte vorausging: das
Heiligtum S.Maria della Sorresca aus dem dreizehnten
Jahrhundert, der Palazzo di Domiziano, einer der
bedeutendsten archäologischen Komplexe des unteren
Latium die sogenannte Lukullusquelle; die Piscina di
Faberio Murena, die vom Meer gespeistwird. Dieser
kulturhistorische Rundgang kann mit einem Besuch des
See- und Küstenmuseums (Museo del mare e della costa)
abgeschlossen werden. Für die Touristen stehen kleine
und große Hotels zur Verfügung, die alle gut bis sehr gut
sind und am Meer oder in der Stadt liegen;
Campingplätze am Strand, zahlreiche Villen und
Ferienwohnungen und ein reichhaltiger Terminkalender
mit Veranstaltungen für jeden Geschmack.
