century, in San Francisco in 1899, an <strong>Irish</strong> piper took possession of a<br />

set of the ‘improved union bagpipes’ made by the Taylor Brothers of<br />

Drogheda, Co louth, and Philadelphia. 280 <strong>Irish</strong> bellows pipes sent for<br />

exhibition in the <strong>Irish</strong> section of the World’s Fair in St louis in 1904,<br />

and supplied by the Dublin musical-instrument firm Butler & Sons,<br />

were identified in the exhibition as ‘<strong>Irish</strong> <strong>Union</strong> <strong>Pipes</strong>’. 281<br />
