Retail worked <strong>ivory</strong> outlets <strong>and</strong> prices<br />
Prior to the CITES <strong>ivory</strong> <strong>trade</strong> ban <strong>in</strong> 1989, Thail<strong>and</strong> was an active importer <strong>and</strong> exporter of worked <strong>ivory</strong>.<br />
Thai Customs statistics show that Hong Kong was by far the most important source of Thail<strong>and</strong>’s<br />
imported worked <strong>ivory</strong>, followed by South Africa <strong>and</strong> then Japan (Luxmoore, 1989, Table 3).<br />
Thail<strong>and</strong> also (re-)exported large quantities of worked <strong>ivory</strong> <strong>in</strong> the late 1970s <strong>and</strong> early 1980s, but the<br />
amounts tapered off significantly <strong>in</strong> the late 1980s. In 1978, the former West Germany <strong>and</strong> the UK were<br />
the ma<strong>in</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>ation countries (Anon., 1978). Table 7 presents a summary of the weights of worked <strong>ivory</strong><br />
imported <strong>and</strong> exported 1978-1988.<br />
