Mission Indiana University South Bend is the comprehensive undergraduate and graduate regional campus of Indiana University that is committed to serving north central Indiana and southwestern Michigan. Its mission is to create, disseminate, preserve, and apply knowledge. The campus is committed to excellence in teaching, learning, research, and creative activity; to strong liberal arts and sciences programs and professional disciplines; to acclaimed programs in the arts and nursing/health professions; and to diversity, civic engagement, and a global perspective. IU South Bend supports student learning, access and success for a diverse residential and non-residential student body that includes under-represented and international students. The campus fosters student-faculty collaboration in research and learning. Appreciation goes to all the faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the campus for their contributions to this project. Particular thanks of the Self- Study Steering Committee go to Chancellor Una Mae Reck for her leadership and her support throughout the three-year self-study process and her careful reading of drafts of the document. Special acknowledgments also go to a group of dedicated individuals whose contributions were vital to the development of Bridge to the Future. Evidence that the campus is addressing and meeting the standards of the Higher Learning Commission was gathered, organized, and evaluated by five Criterion committees, led by faculty co-chairs, working with administrative liaisons. Special thanks go to these campus leaders: Linda Fisher and Lyle Zynda, working with Alfred Guillaume (Criterion One); Peter Bushnell and Cynthia Sofhauser, working with Bill O’Donnell (Criterion Two); Nancy Colborn and Sarah Sage, working with Lynn Williams (Criterion Three); Margaret Scanlan and Andrew Schnabel, working with Salina Shrofel (Criterion Four); and Sushma Agarwal and Bruce Wrenn, working with Ilene Sheffer (Criterion Five). The names of the more than 70 faculty, staff, and student members of these hard-working Criterion committees are listed, with their departmental affiliations, in Chapter Two of this self-study. The value of institutional research to university reporting and strategic planning was welldemonstrated by John Novak, who provided the “institutional snapshot” as well as data from his Peer Institution analysis, NSSE, and enrollment studies which formed a sound statistical basis for the evaluative work of these committees. The “Causeries,” hosted by Vice Chancellor Alfred Guillaume and attended by the Chancellor, also provided a more informal but no less valuable avenue for identifying campus strengths and challenges. The evolving self-study document strongly benefited from the assistance of a group of tireless readers: Linda Fritschner, who followed the text through its several drafts, and editors and commentators Lynn Williams, Ken Smith, Bruce Spitzer, Bill Feighery, Gail McGuire, and the members of the Chancellor’s Cabinet. Thanks to those individuals who worked behind the scenes to manage the logistics of the process. The assistant to the Chancellor, Teri Harness, assisted with the team visit. Maureen Muldoon, of the Office of Special Events, helped with visit arrangements. Our student assistant, Terri Vega, handled the numerous clerical assignments with skill and poise, and helped organize the resource room, with assistance from archivist Alison Stankrauff. Salina Shrofel developed the plan to prepare the campus for the team visit. The graphic design, formatting, and preparation of printer-ready copy are the work of Annaleisa Sentance.
