JOUR-J 341 Newspaper Reporting<br />

The department recommends that students who plan<br />

to continue in a graduate degree program take several<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> world languages, because master’s <strong>and</strong> doctoral<br />

degree programs in English, as well as in many other<br />

areas, commonly require one or two world languages.<br />

English majors may minor in creative writing if they<br />

choose the literature concentration in the major. In place<br />

<strong>of</strong> the ENG-L 202 Literary Interpretation requirement<br />

for the minor, English majors take any creative writing<br />

course. In addition, they have the option to substitute<br />

another creative writing course for the literary survey<br />

requirement <strong>of</strong> the minor.<br />

CERTIFICATE IN PROFESSIONAL WRITING<br />

The goal <strong>of</strong> the certificate program is to produce highly<br />

skilled pr<strong>of</strong>essional writers who are valued for their skills<br />

throughout their pr<strong>of</strong>essional lives. The high academic<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>of</strong> the program are established in recognition<br />

<strong>of</strong> the fact that good writing is difficult to produce. The<br />

program requires students to advance beyond mere<br />

competence <strong>and</strong> strives to enable them to perform well<br />

in pr<strong>of</strong>essional settings, where the ability to plan <strong>and</strong><br />

execute work independently is sometimes crucial.<br />

TOTAL HOURS REQUIRED<br />

Completion <strong>of</strong> the certificate program requires 18 credit<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> course work from the following list <strong>of</strong> approved<br />

courses.<br />
