Jesuitica – Bark to cure bite Jesuit bark (or Pulvis Patrum) is the archaic name for the medicine, quinine, the most celebrated remedy for malaria. Extracted from the cinchona tree, it was discovered by the native peoples of Peru who noted its ability to reduce fever. Jesuits working in Peru brought it to Europe. Based on their recommendation, the wife of the Spanish Viceroy in Lima, Peru, was cured of malaria in 1630, and this success greatly increased the renown of the remedy. AROUND THE WORLD Pope Celebrates 100 Years of the Pontifical Biblical Institute Pope Benedict XVI addressed professors and students of the Jesuits‟ Pontifical Biblical Institute on October 26 to mark the Institute‟s 100 th anniversary. Pope Pius X founded the Institute in 1909 and entrusted its direction to the Society of Jesus. In his address, the Pope recognized the important work of the Institute and expressed his gratitude to the Society for maintaining the Institute in Rome and in Jerusalem. The Pope praised the Institute for making a “significant contribution to this renewal with scientific biblical research, the teaching of biblical disciplines and the publication of qualified studies and specialized journals.” US Congress Honours Jesuits on the 20 th Anniversary of their Deaths in El Salvador On October 21, the US House of Representatives approved House Resolution 761, which remembers and commemorates the lives and work of the six Jesuit priests and two women on the occasion of the 20 th anniversary of their deaths at the University of Central America (UCA) on November 16, 1989. Matteo Ricci Exhibit Opens in the Vatican An exhibit titled “On the Crest of History, Father Matteo Ricci (1552-1610): Between Rome and Peking” opened on October 30 in the Vatican‟s Charlemagne Wing. The exhibit marks the 400 th anniversary of the death of the Jesuit missionary with western artworks from the 16 th and 17 th centuries, as well as Chinese objects and paintings, some of which are more than 3000 years old. Ricci was the first westerner to be received at Beijing‟s Imperial Court during the Ming dynasty. Monsignor Claudio Giuliodori, the Bishop of Ricci‟s native Macerata in Central Italy, said he hoped the exhibit, which runs through January 24, would further bolster “friendship with the Chinese people … and ties of communion with the Catholics of this great country”. Upcoming Events: NEWS FROM Jesuits in Social Action (JESA) a) Workshop on “Census 2011: Identity for Tribal Religion and Tribal Migrants” The Process for the forthcoming Census 2011 has already started. In the format of the Census study there is a column for „Religion‟ in which 6 religions are officially mentioned and coded, namely (Hindus, Sikhs,
Jains, Buddhists, Muslims and Christians). Unfortunately “Tribal Religion” which was mentioned in the first 1951 census of the Independent India has been removed since 1961 Census. Secondly, the Scheduled Tribes, who migrate to various cities within India, are often excluded from the Census both in their places of origin as well as in the places of their destination/residence. This deprives them of their identity and right of franchise. Keeping these 2 important concerns of the tribals in mind, and the importance of collective bargaining from the Census Commissioner for inclusion of these 2 columns in the Census Format for 2011, Indian Social Institute (ISI) and South Asian Peoples‟ Initiatives (SAPI) is organizing a National Workshop on “Census 2011: Identity for Tribal Religion and Tribal Migrants”. Dates: Dec 13-15, 2009 Venue: ISI Delhi. The workshop is only a beginning of the campaign which will go on at state levels in the coming years. b) International Workshop on: “Jesuit Advocacy: Better Governance of Natural Resources” Jesuits in Social Action (JESA) in collaboration with Social Justice Secretariat (SJS) Rome and the Social Apostolate Coordinators of Africa & Madagascar and East Asia & Oceania Conferences with the partnership of Alboan, Spain is organizing an International Workshop on "Jesuit Advocacy: Better Governance of Natural Resources”. Dates: Feb 13 - 23, 2010 Venue: XISS, Ranchi. Around 25 participants from these three Conferences are expected to participate in it. Another 15 participants from India will participate only on the first 3 days more as observers. c) National Conference on: “Resurgence of Religious Identity and Violence: Causes, Consequences and Response” Indian Social Institutes (ISIs), Bangalore and Delhi are organizing a National Conference on “Resurgence of Religious Identity and Violence: Causes, Consequences and Response”. Dates: Feb 25-28, 2010 Venue: ISI, Bangalore. Total number of participants will be around 100. Participants will be: Heads of grassroots Dalit/Tribal/Minority organizations, College Students/Lecturers, Religious leaders and Secular & Progressive writers & Journalists. On the 22nd of February 2009, Fr. General , Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, S.J inaugurated the Jubilee Year at the end of a Light and Sound Programme. organized for the occasion. Since then we had staff training programme and formators programme in connection with the Jubilee.
