LCE, JAMSHEDPUR The pending University B.Ed. practicals were held from 29 October till 7 November. Principal Kuru took time off from his busy schedule to travel to Chennai to attend the Principals Meeting of Higher Education from 6-8 November. While he was away, Hilary co-ordinated the practicals, that were still remaining to be finished, to their successful completion. Alex represented the community at the CRI meeting held in Loyola School on November 8. Hilary made a trip to Purulia to conduct a recollection on Friday, 13 November, for the Sisters of Holy Child Convent. The Practice Teaching of the present batch is almost over. The regular classes will resume from 30 November. Kuru, Hilary and the other four lecturers of the college, namely, Mrs Vijay Sharma, Mrs Monika Uppal, Mrs Sangita Sinha and Mrs Sarita Sahay attended the National Seminar in Education on Bharat Ratna Maulana Abul Kalm Azad sponsored by NCTE New Delhi and was organised by the Faculty of Education, Jamshedpur Women‟s College on November 24. Besides the lecturers, Kuru presented a paper at the seminar on “The Role of Teachers in Expanding Mental Horizon and National Development.” - Hilary Lobo LOYOLA NIWAS, JAMSHEDPUR The month of November found this community on wheels. As PCF, Jerry Cutinha – already on the move since mid October - completed his visitation of the scholastics in the third week of November after being on the road for 5 weeks. Eric Cassel set off on the first day of November as he escorted the two sisters of Late Bro. Wency D’Souza from Bombay around the Steel City for a couple of days, to the Temple City in Bhubaneswar for another two days, and finally, a whirlwind visit to the City of Joy in Kolkata. In the meantime, Province Treasurer, Alex Mascarenhas too found that he was much in demand for an Accounts Course in Rourkela in mid-November. Octogenarian John Guidera was not to be outdone and he too traveled all the way to Secunderabad for a 5-day meeting of Province Development Directors. Hardly had Jerry unpacked his bags, he was off the next day by train with Alex Mascarenhas on a fact-finding mission to Gomoh. Mike T Raj, the Provincial, took time off for his own annual retreat before going about meeting the men in the field – “cura personalis” – in Tundi, Dhanbad, Chandankiyari, the Kolhan Area and Orissa, in particular Sankhabhanga and Kandhamal. With so many on the move, Loyola Niwas wore a deserted look with barely a few lights on at night. It‟s only in the last week of November that we had, Br. Tony Stevens, our “solitary boast” for the Novitiate in Lucknow for Brothers, staying with us and working with the MC Sisters in Nirmal Hriday and Shishu Bhavan after having spent two weeks already with the community at Loyola School, Chaira. This is part of the Novitiate Programme of work experience in one‟s own Province. Tony will be completing his second year as a novice on July 1, 2010. Eric Cassel LOYOLA SCHOOL, BHUBANESWAR This year‟s Children‟s Day Mela on 14th November was a record of a sort! First, we had a record crowd of over 6000 parents and well wishers. Second, we had a record, profit of about 1 lakh 44 thousand and, third, it was the hottest day ever recorded in Bhubaneswar for over 50 years. Well, ”All‟s Well That End‟s Well”. The credit goes to our teaching staff, office and support staff and the Jesuit Community, who put their heads together and joined hands for a common cause.
Vice Principal, Amaladoss, is attending the ICSE Principal‟s Conference at Lucknow, learning the ropes of how the Council Schools function. The preparations for the Parents‟ Night on 19 December are in full swing. Pascal is racing against time to get the stage ready for the show. - Pius Fernandes LOYOLA SCHOOL, JAMSHEDPUR By the end of October the season of exams was over in Loyola campus and the students at once sprang into action. One could see the staff and students practicing long hours in the field for the Annual Sports Day. Commuters by the road paused to take in the display of row upon row of dazzling House colour flags, flapping in the air, as they were being carried to the measured beats coming from drums and bugles of the school band. Even at this initial stage of practice it was a magnificent sight to behold. Loyola School organized and participated in a lot of activities in the month of November and brought in laurels to the school. The Biology Club organized Symbiosis on 7 to 9 November. The History Cell organized “Yesterday Once More”, for seven schools in town. Making use of time and facilities, the Computer Club organized “Etrix” an E--educational entertainment programme for budding computer buffs in which 18 schools from the town participated. Last year this event was organized at Tata Auditorium in the XLRI Campus. In the National Debate competition of ASISC at Hyderabad, a student from Loyola stood first. Seven students participated in the ICSE National Basketball and Swimming Competition in Bangalore and one of them won a prize. A group of 120 students of Interact Club stayed in school and organized its two-day programme. The participants came from Jharkhand and Bihar. Victor Misquith attended the Annual All ICSE/ISE Principals Meet in Lucknow. To walk into Loyola will no more be the same since it is one of the centres for holding the IIM CAT Exam from November 28 to 7 December. JYOTI organized its 26 th Interschool Basketball Tournament form 16 to 21 November in Loyola School basketball court. 15 schools participated in the tournament. The CRI Meeting was organized here at Loyola on 8 November with 48 religious taking part in a session that started at 9 in the morning and finished with a sumptuous lunch arranged by our Minister, Maxi Lakra. Pastor Cyril Tigga was away in Patna making his annual retreat and Jaison, also doing his Guided Pastoral Ministry, took care of the spiritual needs of Sonari Parish, .where he found himself administering the Sacraments of Baptism and Matrimony, even officiating at a burial. He called for a meeting of the youth of the parish and was pleasantly surprised at the large turnout. - Jaison Joshua ST. XAVIER'S, LUPUNGUTU The Government sponsored Mid-Day Meal scheme commenced from July, 2009. It is only for the students of Class 7 and 8. Six hundred students avail this scheme daily. The students are more than happy. On 14 November all the 1300 students came wearing “coloured dress” to celebrate Children‟s Day. The children staged a variety of programmes. At the same time the School bid tearful farewell to Mr. Joseph Bhengra, who retired on 31 October 2009 after 36 years of dedicated and committed teaching service. The Sent-up Exam for 180 Tenthers and 90 Inter College Students and the 2 nd Term Exam for 7 th to 9 th Classes were held from the 16-21 November, 2009. The Middle and High Schools together are going to celebrate the feast of St. Francis Xavier, the patron saint of the schools, on 3 December, 2009. Both the Schools are fully engaged to preparing for the Annual Sports Day, scheduled for 13 December, 2009 at 12:30 p.m.
