DNS, DIGWADIH After the kidnapping and killing of our student last month, we have fortified our security and the various companies around this place have helped us with men, machines and materials to fill the ditches which were left behind after the new road was constructed. It is already 16 months since the construction began. It is still not yet ready for the public vehicles to ply as the work goes on painfully at a snail‟s pace putting all our students and teachers to great inconvenience. Saby, the Principal, has been after the contractor to finish the road as soon as possible but the response from the other end ironically stops with the usual lame excuses. On November 1, more than 500 students of 60 State-run and Private schools had a date with science at the Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR) on the occasion of the 17 th National Children‟s Science Congress. Different schools presented models on a myriad of topics on science including Chandrayan I, Aila Cyclone, Green House Effect, Protection of Flora and Fauna. Despite the tough competition, our students from the English Medium School were awarded the First Prize in the Senior Category for their live presentation of Rain Water Harvesting and Water Filter to convert dirty water into drinking water while our Hindi School students walked off with the First Prize in the Junior Category for their presentation on Village Economy, which was appreciated by the judges for its ingenuity. Our parish was the venue for this year‟s Catholic Mahila Sangh‟s Annual Gathering. Nearly 150 Mahilas from six parishes of Dhanbad Deanery gathered in our school campus on November 7 and they were warmly welcomed and accommodated in the classrooms. At the end of the „milan‟ all were in praise of the arrangements, inputs, both physical and spiritual‟ and other logistic support, thanks to Pastor Alex Misquith, who made sure that everything went off without a hitch. The feast of Christ the King was celebrated on a local level with a procession starting from the Hindi School and then through the newly constructed concrete road, entering through the main gate and concluding with a solemn Eucharistic celebration. On Brothers Day on October 31, we felicitated Amal Raj with a special Mass and dinner. Children‟s Day was celebrated with class picnics in the Senior School while the Junior School students were treated to a children‟s movie and, thereafter, to a class picnic on a small scale with their own class teachers. George Thana‟s birthday was celebrated as Rector‟s Day and the praises and adulations showered on him that day from the entire school community spoke loud and clear how much he is being loved and admired. We wish him ad multos annos as he still goes very strong and steady. We had a combined birthday celebration of Thana and Kosga with the entire Dhanbad Deanery being invited to mark this double celebration. - Sebastian Puthenpura INIGO NIWAS Since the last few days of October the candidates are experiencing wonderful moments. On October 25, the Inigo community had a picnic in Maluka. The candidates seemed to have enjoyed the outing to Maluka, especially the great hospitality given to them by the Bethany Sisters, Amrit and the community. The candidates along with Augustine and Sanay stayed there for a night and a full day filling their time with games, walks, fun and just relaxing in each other‟s company. They also enjoyed doing the „Sailo‟ dance with the hostel children, which, of course, was a first-time experience for those coming from the south of India. Everything may pass away but our outing to Maluka may never fade away just like the Father‟s unconditional love. November 8, the feast of „Khuntpani Mata‟, was yet another grace-filled day. Our candidates were tremendously excited about the pilgrimage to Khuntpani, to discover more about the place, the local people and the significance of the feast day. They went there on their cycles. At Khuntpani, some of the candidates were involved in playing musical instruments to help the girls of Lupungutu Hostel dance well the entrance dance. Three other candidates were specially kept busy selling books in Ho (written by Fr. Deeney). There was indeed a big sale of the books on that day.
On the 7 th evening, our two diocesan candidates were specially blessed by the visit of Bishop Felix. In the third week, 16th-21, the collegians were busy appearing for their half-yearly exam. All of them look satisfied with the hard work they had put in for their preparation and subsequently have written the exam well. In the mean time Augustine urin had gone on a vocation promotion tour to Gumla Diocese. This time he visited Vikarmpur, Rajawal, Nawadih, Tongo, Deogam, Majhatoli, and many more! -Antony Sanay Soreng JESU BHAVAN, <strong>JAMSHEDPUR</strong> The Novices had a few enriching experiences last month. On 28 October they visited Cheshire Home, Patel Bagan. Spending a few hours with the inmates and feeding them was a new experience for many. The commitment and the devotion of the Sisters in caring for the mentally and physically challenged inmates touched the heart of one and all. The same day the Novices visited Pratiksha and spent a few hours with the seminarians, praying and playing together. What we enjoyed most was the „CASMIRI FOOD‟, (Prepared by Fr. Casmir Vas) and the lavish hospitality of Fr. Mathew and the Brothers. To conclude the month of the Rosary and to prepare themselves for the Long Retreat and the Hospital Experiment, the novices made a pilgrimage to „Dhori Mata Shrine at Jharia‟. Thanks to the hospitality and generosity of St. Xavier‟s Jesuit community, Bokaro, the trip became memorable. Once in Bokaro, Fr. Kurian and community made sure that we had the best of everything - food, accommodation, transport etc. Frs. Francis, George and Sch. Aravind accompanied us to various places and they made sure that we visited the Steel Plant, one of the biggest in the country. A “big thank you” goes out from the bottom of our hearts to the members of the community of St. Xavier‟s. On 13 November the novices celebrated the feast of their patron, St. Stanislaus Kostka. Eric, Socius to the Provincial, inspired them with a beautiful homily during the evening Mass presided over by him. 13 First Year novices started their Long Retreat on 15 November. The second years, in the meantime, are in Kolkata with the M. C. Brothers for the hospital experiment. Kapil, Socius to the Novice Master, escorted them. UPASANA, <strong>JAMSHEDPUR</strong> - Joseph Kalathoor Carl Dincher left for Cuttack on the 11 of November to give a retreat to the sisters of Joseph‟s Convent and returned on 22 evening. Now he is spending most of his time in composing and sending out his Christmas message to the benefactors. After returning from Kolkata, Kapil took off for a short break with a plan of visiting his relatives at ChHattisghar. We are expecting him to be in Jesu Bhavan in the beginning of December. Apart from taking care of different groups at Upasana, Xavier is fully involved with the workers at the farm to produce much needed vegetables, which are difficult to find in the market today. In November Upasana hosted three retreats. Fr. Joseph Fonseca, CssR conducted the first one for which was present a very large number of diocesan priests from Jamshedpur. They expressed their satisfaction with the retreat and the care they received. Gautam directed the second one for those diocesan priests who could not come for the other retreats for various reasons. The third one was a pre-ordination retreat, directed by Archbishop Pascal Topno, SJ, which was arranged for the Deacons of Hazaribagh and Jamshedpur as well. Fr. Sanjay Kujur, CssR very successfully conducted a three-day young priests evaluation meeting for which eighteen Redemptorists came from different places – from far and near. They were serious about their business and extremely happy to have come to Upasana. They had a highly reflective and interactive session with our Provincial, Mike. During the month of November a few more Jesuits from the province and elsewhere came to enjoy the calm and quiet atmosphere of Upasana while making their annual retreat. - C Gautam
