INTRODUCTION<br />
Tel ephone Hill, the recommended site <strong>of</strong> the new Leg is1ati ve Ha 11, is<br />
located vii thi n the ori gi na1 <strong>Juneau</strong> townsi te <strong>and</strong> was one <strong>of</strong> the fi rst areas<br />
claimed by early settlers. With its sweeping view <strong>of</strong> Gastineau Channel <strong>and</strong><br />
Douglas Isl<strong>and</strong>, .the hill has been an attraction throughout the area's history <strong>of</strong><br />
habitation.. Because <strong>of</strong> the 13 structures present <strong>and</strong> the association <strong>of</strong> people<br />
significant in Alaska. history with the site <strong>and</strong> structures, it was appropriate<br />
to conduct a historic si.te <strong>and</strong> structures survey.<br />
The Alaska Department <strong>of</strong> Transportation <strong>and</strong> Public Facilities contracted<br />
Alaska Archives Resource <strong>and</strong> Records r·1anagement to perform historical,<br />
architectural <strong>and</strong> archaeological surveys <strong>of</strong> the Telephone Hill site <strong>and</strong><br />
structures. We were to apply the criteria <strong>of</strong> the National Register <strong>of</strong> Historic<br />
Places to our findings <strong>and</strong> make recommendations as to significance. A<br />
prel iminary report on the survey was submitted on 3 January 1984. The final<br />
report contains the results <strong>of</strong> the survey <strong>and</strong> the findings <strong>of</strong> significance. A<br />
dt scussion <strong>of</strong>. survey methodology is included, <strong>and</strong> the full<br />
range <strong>of</strong> activities,<br />
interviews, research <strong>and</strong> data-gathering methods is presented.<br />
Chapter 35, Section 41.35.070 <strong>of</strong> the Alaska Historic Preservation Act,<br />
defines the guidelines. for the preservation <strong>of</strong> significant historic, prehistoric<br />
<strong>and</strong> archaeological resources threatened by public construction. In compliance<br />
with the Alaska Historic Preservation Act <strong>and</strong> using the criteria <strong>of</strong> the National<br />
Register <strong>of</strong> Historic Places, Alaska Archives Resource <strong>and</strong> Records ~~anagement<br />
submits the following report <strong>of</strong> its research <strong>and</strong> findings.<br />
